Yes. And a perfect example of why doing that on a yearly basis is a poor way to run a small market club.

except that last year Byrd helped us to the playoffs and one of the greatest nights in Pittsburgh sports playoff history. As of right now, I'll still take the tradeoff...

A deal they had to make. It left them with Hansen and a bunch of guys in the lower minors, and Mercer looks good for the long term, so they were free to overpay for something they needed right then. Not at all like the Zane Smith deal. True, the Pirates needed Smith, but when Bonds left they had nothing to replace him with. Moises Alou would have filled that spot nicely.

I hate injuries. I esp hate injuries to stud players. And I want us to catch and beat the Cards with them at full strength. So I am glad he's back. And I hope he sucks. ;)

Adam Dunn traded to the A's because why not? Already "pot committed" so to speak and one of these moves is bound to pay off eventually.

I noticed this a couple of weeks ago, but Victor Martinez currently has 31 HRs and 40 Ks.

Quote:
Know how many hitters have hit that many home runs, in the 162-game-schedule era (1961-present), in a season in which they struck out 45 times or fewer? Let's just say it won't take long for you to memorize this list -- because there are only three names on it:

Player Year Strikeouts Home runs
Don Mattingly 1986 35 31
Don Mattingly 1985 41 35
Gary Sheffield 1992 40 33
Barry Bonds 2004 41 45
Barry Bonds 1994 43 37

And now Victor Martinez is fixing to join them. He's been whiffing, on the average, about 1.5 times a week this year. So if that keeps up, he's in.

To put this in better perspective, Joe DiMaggio once had a season (1941) in which he hit 30 homers and struck out exactly 13 times. So it's not as if Martinez is setting any sort of record.

But by the standard of modern times, when swinging and missing is getting more commonplace than the seventh-inning stretch? It's awesome. And worth of a mention in the first edition of the 2014 September History Watch. There's more to come. So stay tuned.
