Rick Ankiel, certainly one of the more fascinating players in recent years, has hung up his spikes and retired.

http://mlb.si.com/2014/03/05/rick-ankie ... t=obinsite

Quote:
Indeed, for as sudden and shocking the dissolution of Ankiel’s control on the mound was, he showed remarkable persistence in working his way back. As a pitcher, he lost both the 2002 season and about a full year between mid-2003 and mid-2004 due to injuries, and he missed all of 2006 after converting to the outfield but before making it back to the majors. While his return didn’t turn out as well as those of George Sisler, Babe Ruth, or even Lefty O’Doul and Rube Bressler, his conversion from pitcher to position player was still the most successful one of the past half-century.

Some guy in Tampa has an autographed baseball for every player and coach to appear for the Rays. Pretty impressive.

Just came by to LOL at the Angels once again for trading their only legit prospect (Segura) from the world's worst farm system for a quarter season of Zack Grienke.

Funny line from the following ESPN Confidential: http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10647 ... n-magazine

Quote:
Would you be in favor of an MLB salary cap?
Yes: 6 percent; No: 94 percent

AL pitcher: "No way. That's a horrible question. If that's really a question, I am ending the interview right now."

According to the data integrator that is Facebook, here are the catchment areas for each Major League team:

Full map: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ear ... ok_MLB.jpg

And a screenshot of the Nats (just since I found this on the Post):

The Nats are brown, the Yankees black, and the Buccos yellow.

Red Sox red and Yankees black all over the country. Way to not be bandwagoners, America.

I can't help but wonder how much of that is due to ESPN and the like showing nothing but Red Sox and Yankees games on national TV.

Gives you a rough idea of where market demand will for be for a particular team to be on a regional sports network.

Alex Pressley was released by the Twins and has been picked up by the Astros.

In other words, out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Hamilton out 6-8 weeks with a torn UCL in his thumb. He was looking great to start this year. Bad break for him. When he was in his prime he was a blast to watch.

Yup.

Matt Moore tore his UCL. Likely will need Tommy John. Shame.

One of the better stories I've read re: Aaron's quest for 715.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mlb/news/20140408/hank-aaron-715-home-runs-anniversary-barry-bonds/

Talking with Al Downing, who gave up #715:

"The pitch that he threw me that night -- if I can remember, it's been a long time, forty-some years -- it was supposed to be a screwball," Aaron said.
"It was a sinker," Downing said.
"Sinker?"
"Didn't sink."
"I was trying to get it before it sunk."
"You got it."

I don't think Puig O Mania is going to slow down anytime soon. Not given the evidence of his scary immigration to the US, or for days like this in the outfield:

http://mlb.si.com/2014/04/17/watch-yasiel-puig-drops-flyball-makes-great-catch-dodgers-giants/

If Dominique Wilkins was known as the Human Highlight Film, well, that appellation is going to be handed over to Puig sometime soon...

I have a lot more sympathy for Puig now knowing some of what he went through to get out of Cuba.
