Any baseball fan realizes that the Pirates emphasize their pitchers keeping the ball on the ground, and thereby keeping the ball in the park. Fangraphs allows me to see how well the staff performed this function last year. The answer ... very well. VERY well.

The Pirates have 7 of the top 20 ground balls pitchers in the NL last season among those who threw at least 70 IP:

2. Morton 62.9%
3. Melancon 60.3%
7. Burnett 56.5%
12. Gomez 55.4%
15. Locke 53.2%
16. Wilson 53%
20. Mazzarro 52.2%

Bryan Morris also ran up a 57.5% ground ball rate but threw less than 70 innings.

As a team, the Pirates' 52.5% ground ball rate easily led MLB. That ground ball rate was the first number over 50% since the 2005 Cardinals.

This is a great stat find. Also, I think it's a little bit telling that we can't expect quite as many ground balls to happen in 2014.

If AJ does not return, then the figure is likely to decline.

But I still think AJ returns, and the ground ball stats remain very good.
