One dark-horse relief pitcher who may become another in a line of very good arms out of the Pirates' pen is Zack Thornton, a tall, hard-throwing righty who induces a lot of ground balls, does not walk batters, and keeps the ball in the park.

In other words, the Pirates' formula.

Thornton was drafted by the A's in 2010, and the Buccos obtained him at the end of the 2012 season for Chris Resop. That was a deal most of us liked at the time, and for good reason.

Thornton deals in the low to mid-90's, and developed a slider as his K pitch. His control is superb - just 12 BB in 75 IP last year. He also fanned 90 in those 75 innings, including 31 K's in 25 IP in AAA.

Combined over the past 3 minor league seasons, Thornton has posted 215 IP, just 178 H's allowed, 54 BB, 246 K's, 11 HR's allowed, an ERA of 2.97, and a FIP of 2.33.

Thornton continued his impressive showing in the Arizona Fall League this past fall, throwing 14.1 IP, giving up just 8 H's, 4 BB, 14 K, and posting a solid WHIP and ERA.

Thornton and Pimentel make me believe the Pirates have an abundance of R-handed pen arms, and can deal some of the surplus to upgrade the 1B situation.

OK, you have now just copied and pasted this into your "Quick Parts" paste dictionary, right?

Right next to "downward plane", no doubt.

Also worth noting his huge splits last year ... Thornton annihilated righties last year ... their line against him was .172/.212/.244 (compared to .260/.294/.337 against lefties). He supposedly has an atypical delivery (I've never seen video of it) where he has a lower angle release point which is assumed to be the culprit of the drastic splits.

Another solid return from a scrapheap bullpen FA Huntington acquired and the Pirates were able to polish.

Yes, I read that in some of the scouting reports - he drops down below 3/4 and is tough on righties as a result.

Hope he is more than a ROOGY, however. The .631 OPS against by lefties is somewhat encouraging - it's not like lefties hammered him.
