Taking nominations for the best ever defensive outfield.

This is a toughie.

I remember folks raving about the range the Phillies had with Maddox, Matthews and McBride back in the day. Probably far from the best ever, but enough to start the conversation.

The Pirates had 2/3 of the best defensive outfield I ever saw with Bonds and Van Slyke, but right field was problematic. Maybe good enough to make the list when Espy played in right.

Well, the Billy Martin A's famously had Tony Armas (a cannon of an arm), Rickey Henderson who had a CF glove, and Dwayne Murphy who was pretty amazing.

And just googled the 51-52 Dodgers with Carl Furillo in right and Duke Snider in CF, both with cannon arms and legendary accuracy, and some guy named Pafko in left (who'd supposedly been a quality CF) and Pete Reiser in 53 in left who won Rookie of the Year and is now most notable as the guy who didn't know what the warning track was. He hit the wall so hard on so many occasions that he only had one season and was even given last rites after one collision.

And last year's Angels would have to be included as well, wouldn't it? Esp if we're looking at the still hypothetical arrival of Polanco? They had Trout, Bourjous and Hunter....

That 1966 NL All Star Team ran a pretty decent outfield on to the field in Aaron, Mays, and Clemente. (haha)

How about the 1993 Giants with Bonds in LF, Darren Lewis in CF, and Willie McGee in RF

McGee was also part of a pretty good outfield in St. Louis along with Vince Coleman. Who was their right fielder?

Wasn't it Van Slyke?

Cameron, Ichiro and whoever the Mariners had in left had to be pretty good. Randy Winn?

Van Slyke was the primary right fielder for only one year, 1985 (replacing Joggin' George Hendrick). He split time there in 1986 with Tito Landrum, then got traded to the Bucs.

Andy played 62 games at third and 79 at first as a Cardinal. I have a lot of respect for Whitey Herzog, but I can't see how you play your best defensive outfielder at first base, EVER. Third I can see, it's a tough position to fill, but first base? Either Hendrick or Landrum must have been in right for most of Van Slyke's games at first. Hendrick played a lot of first base; he took over for Hernandez when Whitey shipped his coked up behind to the Mets. I can't figure out why he'd put Andy at first and play George in right.

Okay, this bothered me so much that I went back and looked at the lineups. Jack Clark started the season as the every day first baseman in 1986, but it looks like he went down with an injury in late June, and Whitey was forced to play mix and match for the rest of the season. Most of the left handed at bats at first went to Van Slyke and Clint Hurdle after that. Whitey usually had Curt Ford or John Morris in right when Andy played first base, and neither had more than a handful of games at first in their careers. Van Slyke was a lot more experienced in the infield than either one, so that's where he played. Can't figure out why he played Van Slyke at first and Hendrick in right in 1984, though. Hendrick had played 92 games at first the year before. Maybe he was just dreadful there.

If you're talking 2001 it would not have been Winn.

It would have been... Al Martin?

Dang it. I'm losing my perspecasity!

*looking it up*

Wow. I was right?! Al Martin (with a 37 year old Stan Javier filling in).

2003 was Win in left, Cameron in center, and Ichiro in right.

Fred Lynn was one hell of an outfielder. And yeah, Gary Maddox seemed to glide to everything hit his way.

I would have to go with Clemente.

In all seriousness, I took a spill on some hidden ice while out on a walk my dog and I am wearing a rather cumbersome brace on my wrist . . . no fx though.
