Oh, great.

All this will do is drive up his FA value and the FO will be forced to trade him sooner rather than later.

Not that we didn't notice all this ourselves, but...

http://espn.go.com/blog/statsinfo/post/ ... me-won-out

Quote:
McCutchen didn’t just hit the ball, he hit the ball hard. Inside Edge, which does video review of every at-bat of every game for major-league teams and media, rates every batted ball as hard, medium or soft.

McCutchen’s at-bats resulted in a hard-hit ball 26 percent of the time. That rated highest in the National League and fourth-best in the majors.

In the last two seasons, Cutch has 2 Silver Sluggers, 1 Gold Glove, 2 All-Star Appearances, 2 Top-3 MVP Finishes, 2 NL Most Outstanding Players, and 1 MVP. Oh, and he led my fantasy team to a championship and second-place finish, respectively.

I salute the face of the franchise!

Here's the list of Pirates who won some form of the National League Most Valuable Player Award:

1927 -- Paul Waner (OF) (called the "League Award")
1960 -- Dick Groat (SS) (BWAA National League Most Valuable Player Award)
1966 -- Roberto Clemente (OF)
1978 -- Dave Parker (OF)
1979 -- Willie Stargel (1B) (shared with Keith Hernandez of the St. Louis Cardinals)
1990 -- Barry Bonds (OF)
1992 -- Barry Bonds (2) (OF)
2013 -- Andrew McCutchen (OF)

So Cutch's win marks the 8th time a Pittsburgh Pirate has been named the Most Valuable Player of the National League, and he becomes the 7th Pirate to win such an award (and the 6th Pirate to win the BWAA version of the award, first given out in 1931).

Pretty cool history.

And Wagner probably would have won a few as well if they had the award in his day.

I'm guessing that he'd have had to put an addition onto his house to hold them all. Eight batting titles back in the day when batting average was considered to be the ultimate offensive stat, plus five SB titles, plus five RBI titles, plus a reputation for outstanding defense. Baseball instituted an early version of the MVP, called the Chalmers award, in 1911 through 1914. Wagner was 37 years old in 1911. He finished third, second, and eighth in the voting over the first three years of the Chalmers award, and, taking a quick glance at his competition, he probably should have won it in 1911.

Yeah. Honus Wagner was the greatest Pirate of all time. He would have won somewhere between 4 and 7 MVPs, by my count.
