Pirates are looking into Loney.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are believed to be eyeing free agent James Loney as their top choice to fill first base in 2014, reports Jayson Stark of ESPN. The club has also looked into the availability of Mitch Moreland and Adam Lind.

Quote:
For now, however, the Pirates are fixated on Loney, who has long been known for having a sterling glove at first base. His defensive reputation has helped hide a mediocre bat, however. Over an eight-year career, he has a .285/.340/.421 batting line. That appeared to be trending downward and, in 2012, he posted just a 630 OPS in a season split between the Dodgers and Red Sox. He took a one year deal worth $2 million to join the Rays, and had a resurgence at the plate. Over 158 games in 2013, he hit .299 with a 778 OPS, his best mark since an outstanding 96-game stint in 2007.

Report is Loney is looking for a 3 year $27 to $30 million deal.

A solid bounce-back season can buy you a lot these days.

Free-agent first baseman James Loney is reportedly seeking a three-year contract in the range of $27-30 million on the open market, reports Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

While that might seem like a lot of money for a guy coming off of a $2 million reclamation deal, it's actually down from his original offseason asking price. Loney was reportedly searching for a four-year, $40 million contract when November began, per Passan, but has taken a year and about $10 million off the price since then.

That's a hefty chunk of change. On the plus side, while Loney doesn't have a ton of playoff experience, he has done well when he's been there.

His price tag goes down every day, but we run the risk of someone scooping him up as we wait. It's a game of "Chicken." I think they ought to put an offer out on the table for slightly under what he's asking- say, 3 years, $25 million.

Completely agree. In my opinion this is the one hole on the diamond that needs filled. Sanchez everyday player? I'm not sure about that.

I agree that he's the guy. But maybe we should go 16 million with a club option of 8 for the third year.
