"He (Joey Votto) has to fit better into the role we see for him, or he might have to hit in a different spot in the order..... that's something Bryan will certainly approach Joey with, and something we will discuss. There are certain things he has to do."

There's really nothing Votto nor the Reds/line-up placement can do to change the fact that Votto gets pitched around. Well, likely losing Choo from lead-off will probably help a bit considering he also got on base at a 40% clip. Leading the league with an OBP of .435 and leading the league in BBs for three consecutive years isn't the reason the Reds struggled. There were other glaring line-up holes like Phillips barely posting an OPS over .700, Frazier's sophomore slump and getting 0 production out of LF. Votto had a great season, but a down year compared to his career up to this point. Asking a .900+ OPS hitter to change their approach is a mighty slippery slope, but I don't really suspect that that is what Jocketty is getting at.

As far as line-up placement goes, it wouldn't surprise me if more teams start utilizing the nontraditional approach of batting their best hitter second. In his excellent book "The Book: Playing the Percentages", Tom Tango argues for this and it can be summed up in a rather pedestrian way in that the no. 2 hitter ultimately sees more RISP opportunities and has the opportunity to get an extra AB. And, you also just saw even Jim Leyland use that approach with his play-off roster by batting Cabrera second.

Damn, Price wasn't lying when he said he was going to be more analytic.

Sounds like the first hint that Cincy is adopting the "best hitter should bat 2nd" view. Sucks for us.

Yeah, I don't like it.

It makes a lot of sense. If he's going to look for the walk, put him in a spot where that makes more sense.

I've always wondered why managers just seem to throw whoever into the 2 spot.
