I have read from numerous accounts that Gregory Polanco is a better defender than Cutch or Marte. Do you guys think that putting Polanco in LF would be the way to go when he arrives, which would move Marte to RF where he could utilize his cannon?

That is going to be one insane outfield defensively.

If he's even faster than Marte, then yes he should go to left.

If he is faster than Marte then he can damn near fly!

Marte's arm would be nice in RF.

I know I get killed for suggesting this but what about moving Cutch to left as his arm is probably his weakest asset, the other two wherever you want them.

I'd have no problems with that. Scouts seem to love Polanco's defensive potential.

Most mention he takes poor routes (common with young players, most mention he tends to break in on balls hit over his head....the most common miscue) but still has above average range because of his speed. They think once he gets that down, you're looking at plus-plus range.

Reading a bit more on him.....I'm thinking Carlos Gomez with a hit tool.

I wouldn't move The Face of the Franchise unless he was absolutely, positively happy with such a move. Since Cutch is no liability in CF, there is no way you risking pissing off the most important guy in gold and black.

I like this. Cutch in center, Marte parte in left, Polanco in right. Its athletic as baseball has ever seen.

I've mentioned this before. Cutch-Polanco-Marte might be the best defensive alignment. But I agree you don't piss off Cutch.

Easily going to be the best in baseball.

Not much power from your corner OF would be my only complaint. We'd be looking at getting probably 20 to 25 HR total from LF and RF combined.

Look at it this way, that would be a significant improvement over what Tabata/Snider/Milledge/Church/Diaz/Morgan/Moss provided going back the last 5 years. You'd have to go back to the Bay/Nady era when there was any corner OF power.

Within the next year or so, Marte is going to hit that many himself. Polanco ought to be good for another dozen or so right from the start.

But you're getting corner power from your Centerfielder so it makes up for the lack of it from a corner spot.

Marte and Polanco should both hit for power in time. But they don't have to be big home run hitters. The Cards didn't hit a lot of homers but still scored the most runs.

It's also key that we find a good hitter for first base.

RE: Moving Cutch to LF...

The last thing the Pirates need is a[nother] disgruntled franchise LF.

Really? I see and hear this quote a lot. Guess Clemente and Parker couldn't play for you.

Clemente I'll give you, but didn't Parker hit about 20 to 25 HRs a year?

Parker hit over 20 HR ten times in his career, over 25 six times, and over 30 HR three times.

Marte hit 12 this year and Polanco has 16 in 2012 and 12 this year. Until they do otherwise, I'd stick by the comment of not much power from the corner OF positions with those 3. Maybe they will grow into it though.

Clemente was a career .317 hitter with some power. Yeah, get Marte and Polanco hitting over .300 and the power isn't as important. Hitting .280 with only 12 HR and drawing only 25 walks isn't really what you want out of a corner OF but luckily Marte plays superb defense (other than his few bonehead games).
