Maybe it's the 167 games that these 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates have played before tonight's winner-take-all donnybrook. Maybe it's the deliberate nature of baseball, which affords us time to research and consider all manner of things before, during, and after games. Maybe it's the interminably long wait we have endured for a playoff contender. Maybe it's the at-your-fingerprints nature of sports fandom in the digital age. Maybe it's all of these things and more.

Whatever factors are involved, I have forged an emotional attachment to this team that is only exceeded by my attachment to family and friends. I'll wholeheartedly admit that this is not particularly healthy. As a 35-year-old father of three young kids, I shouldn't care this much about a baseball team. But I do. Oh, I do.

And when Cutch, Hometown, El Toro, Byrdman, Smerling's Dad, The Pitch Framer, #Cole45, and the rest of the members of this special team take the field in St. Louis tonight, I will be nervous and anxious and excited and ready to jump through as many superstitious hoops as necessary to guide them to victory. Just keep going, boys. Play the game, and play it well. Don't try to be perfect; just do enough to win.

No matter what happens tonight, this team brought Pittsburgh out of baseball Siberia and into the bright shining lights of October... or #Buctober. The playoff crowds of 40,000+ at PNC Park have shown the sports world that Pittsburgh is not just a football and hockey town. It's a sports town. And it will support these Pirates with full-throated enthusiasm. I was proud to be part of two of those crowds.

As for the game, it's rather simple. Wainwright will try to induce chases on his curve, while Cole will try to keep his fastball down and on the edges. Whoever commands the lower part of the strike zone will likely find success. Will the Cardinals' patient and maddeningly effective hitting approach lead them to a win? Will the Pirates' superior defense make the difference? I don't know. But I'll be watching. Oh, I'll be watching.

And I BELIEVE. Just like my son, Jack.

Agreed.

Still, you've got more to fall back on should the Bucs lose tonight! :D

That's particularly healthy.

This.

On the whole your feelings are shard. It feels good to have invested interest in October baseball again.

A guy could get used to this.

Nice looking son, J_C.

And trust me when I tell you this - the emotions and the raw nerves you feel watching the Pirates are a fraction of what you will feel watching your son play the game.

Az and I watched our sons pitch for a lot of years. It is brutally enjoyable, or delightfully painful. However you want to phrase it.
