These are the keys to success for the pirates tonight.

Be on the Take!

Early in the game the offense needs to see if Wainwright can hit his spots with the curve ball. The B&G needs to work counts to get predictable fastballs and then pounce on them. In the first meeting the Buccos swung at a lot of pitches out of the zone which really works into the hand of the opponent.

Spoil em Rotten

The Pirates cannot be over aggressive when behind in the count. Spoil some good pitches by fouling them off. Big hacks against wainwright unless they are fastballs will convert themselves to outs. Run up his pitch count early in the game.

Shut em Up

Score first! Take the pressure off you rookie pitcher and get the crowd sitting on their hands.

No Free Pass

The Cardinals are very good at converting walks. Walks are like liquid momentum to them. Throw strikes and make them beat you with their bats. Check this out. Game 1: 6 of 9 runs were walked on base. Game 2: 0 of 1 were walked on base. Game 3: 1 of 3 were walked on base. Game 4: 1 of 2 were walked on base.

Total 8 of the Cardinals 15 total runs got on via the walk.

Take the Fifth

Every game thus far the Cardinals have scored in the 5th inning. Nuff Said.

I don't agree with point number 1. They took too many fastballs down the middle off Wacha trying to work counts. Get your hacks at the fastball to make him work instead of getting in the hole 0-1 every at bat. Lay off the curve in the dirt. Also, call time and step out of the box if Wainwright tries to work fast like Wacha did. I was sitting in the stand screaming to step out as he was damn near in his wind up as soon as their second foot stepped inside the batters box for 7 straight innings.

I think patience is key, and something to work on.

Too many times people have been chasing balls in the dirt.

That is the key.

Lay off the low stuff. Make him come up high.

Agree with you 100%, and this has been a sticking point all season. Marte is the worst. When he does that fake bunt thing on the first pitch, it's always strike 1. Then he fouls off #2 for an 0-2 count. Not a good way to start an at bat.

I do agree with just about everything else the OP posted.

Let's Go Bucs.

Don't give up outs on the basepaths.

The one fundamental that has remained unchanged since the Russell era when all fundamentals were out of whack. Maddening.

Should be one rule for hitters from here on out - DO NOT SWING AT THE FIRST PITCH NO MATTER WHAT

Nope. A lot of times the first pitch is the best one you are going to see, and maybe the only one that is really hittable.

They have to go up there ready to react to what they see, not make pre-determined decisions about when to swing and when not to.

All that did for them against Wacca was put them in an 0-1 hole by watching belt high fastballs go by. Total opposite. Be prepared to get your cuts from pitch 1 on.

Agree most with #3. Scoring first is huge in a road game five. Need that good juju.

The only thing I'd add, and it's unlikely considering all factors, is getting to the Cards bullpen.

Wainwright is a horse who will toss 120+ pitches, but getting him out in/around the 7th inning could trigger a domino effect. St. Louis' bullpen is not as 'dynamic' as the Pirates, so you'd like to see the Bucs get a crack at it.

Well you got what you wanted. Go up and hack. Fuck, might as well swing at everything. Wainwright finished with less than 100 pitches. Great game plan....Go up and hack. Awesome.

Animal...Morneau 2 for 4 tonight. Garrett Jones hit the first pitch he saw for a lazy fly ball to CF. See you in the minor leagues for a few years before you become a footnote Garrett.

Marte and Walker...Chokers

Yeah 1 for 19 for Marte is horrible. Just not himself.

At the beginning of the season, we all felt confident that Cutch would follow up his breakout season with an MVP-caliber season, (Check), Martin would be the answer to our blackhole at catcher (Check), Grilli would be an effective closer and make us forget about Hanrahan (Check), we needed to find a RF (swing and a miss with Snider but checked by Byrd), AND, if we were going to contend, then our core of players right behind Cutch -- Marte, Walker and Pedro -- were going to have to make the next step up. All three had uneven years, with Marte and Walker missing chunks of the games due to injuries.

How far we go from just-happy-to-be-here status next season will depend on how much further these three guys can take their game.

Let me apologize to all those I offended. I was just plain pissed. I'll say this about the Pirates. Jay Bell Has Some Work To Do!
