No, but he did have a handwritten birth certificate. As soon as we learn to decipher the hieroglyphics...

The sad part is he could probably still hit near .300 as a bench player...

All 44 pages? I think "bored" understates it. If I were you Id seek counseling.

Jones got 1-year, $500,000 with $1,000,000 in incentives.

Texas is the place.

1. We don't pick up anybody that could be of any use.

2. Andruw Jones isn't a backup catcher.

By virtue of the fact that it's the Pirates, they would have to pay considerably more than that to get Jones to come to Pittsburgh. I'm not comfortable paying more than what the Rangers paid for a 32-year-old reclamation project, especially when the focus of the team is rebuilding.

Jones isn't even a backup outfielder anymore.

Hinske will be quite useful. As was Ment, as was Michaels.

But, hey don't let that get in the way of "Copy, Paste, Repeat" posting.

Jason Michaels put up an OPS of .682 last season, including an OBP of .300. How was that useful in any way, shape or form, especially when every at bat he received was one less at bat to evaluate Pearce, Moss or Morgan?

Michaels was as a bench player. If you want Pearce or Moss to get playing time and develop as a contributor, you do not put them on the bench.

How many games did Michaels win with a PH HR or otherwise? That is what I mean by productive. He was a productive bench player who won a few games, and showed in a short "regular" stint that he was not a regular.

He came, he won a couple games. He's gone. His presence while helpful on a few occasions means squat in the overall plan.

As does some of the signings proposed, and made.

Exactly. Which is why I was not a proponent of the Eric Hinske signing, nor will be anything but furious if Craig Monroe is anywhere near the opening day roster. I'd like to take the upcoming season and give Pearce, Moss, Morgan and Andy LaRoche as many at bats as possible, in order to see if they are/can be part of the future solution or whether the organization will need to look elsewhere. I fail to see how spending money on Hinske and Vazquez does anything but take at bats from "prospects" who have reached the age where the big club needs to see if they can actually be productive major leaguers. We can find cheaper options to get a couple hundred ABs in spot duty and put up a sub .700 OPS.

I'd rather have Vazquez, Hinske and Monroe sitting pine, chewing seeds, and occasionally pinch hitting, while Pearce et al are playing every day in AAA. Andy LaRoche will not site no matter who they sign unless he fails.

At twenty-six years old and only one year removed from being named the minor league batter of the year, I'd rather see what Pearce can do at the major league level, his struggles in 2008 notwithstanding. Start him against lefties early in the season to get his confidence up as he has always had excellent splits against left-handed pitchers, but putting a twenty-six year old hitter in AAA for more seasoning isn't in line with my philosophies.

I'd like to give Pearce a shot but he needs to prove he can play at the Majors and his AAA numbers last season werent impressive...and his 137 games at AAA arent that good .318 on base %, .450 slugging, .267 avg

also, Hinske isnt taking atbats away from LaRoche or Moss or Morgan, he is their backup!!!

I still think we need to pick up a free agent Outfielder. He doesn't have to be a great player i just would like to see us get somebody like Luis Gonzalez to add depth so if the young players don't have a standout year we can have somebody to put there in their place for a couple starts.

What ever happened with Hinske's eye?I like him as a bench player but last thing i heard is that he still can't hit lefties.
