For Gerritt Cole today.

This is the type of game where legends can be made. Team's back up against the wall. Loaded lineup across the diamond. Heralded #1 draft pick pitching for the first time in post-season play and . . . to my knowledge . . . the first time in front of a national TV audience.

The nation knows about Matt Harvey. Anytime he took the mound, the national media couldn't cover it enough.
The nation knows about Jose Fernandez. He will likely be the NL ROY.
We were beaten to death with stories about Stephen Strasburg's debut and the "shut down" last year.

Gerritt Cole, while not "ignored," hasn't received nearly the amount of national coverage that others have received.

That can change . . . starting at 1:00 p.m. EDT today.

C'mon Gerritt . . . show 'em what you got. Take the reins, work fast, pound the zone and change your speeds.

Let the legend begin . . . .

He's been a different pitcher his last 3 starts. Better location on the heater and curveball has gotten better too. I'm expecting a win today more so than yesterday. What worries me at this point is for us to win this series, AJ will have to beat Wainright in St Louis.

Well, Gerrit Cole hadn't been nearly as good as those three.

Although if he continues to pitch like he has, he might be there soon.

I have confidence in Cole, but that is a lot of pressure to put on a rookie.

I'm not worried about how much national attention he receives. I just want him to establish himself as a true ace, which I think he will do next year.

I don't give a fig about national attention either.

Just sayin' that, if Cole throws a gem today in a backs-against-the-wall must-win game that is the only game being played, that national attention is going to be coming . . . quickly.

A 3-1 series win would come from a Morton vs Miller or Wacha game at PNC, I would think.

Certainly agree there. Announcers just started mentioning Verlander's name.

To me, Cole becoming a man and an ace in a nutshell today:

Gives up a bad home run, comes right back with the strikeout. That's great pitching.

I've been saying since the first time I saw him in a Pirates uniform that I want him pitching big games. It took him a while to "learn how to pitch", but his determination and will to win isn't in everybody. The guy, in addition to electric stuff, has a bulldog mentality. Just look at his hitting...he doesn't want to fail. If it goes 5, he HAS to be the guy on the mound against Wainwright. I look forward to years of watching him pitch for the Pirates!

Jose Fernandez will probably be ROY and Yasiel Puig gets all the rookie hype, but Cole may continue to prove to be a Livan Hernandez for the Pirates as these playoff go along.

Very exciting stuff.
