Two strong pitchers . . . minimizing number of "hitter's counts" may be the key to strong pitching performance. I always feel that the the first three pitches in any plate appearance are the key.

Top of First

Marte 0-1; 1-1; 1-2 (K swinging on 1-2 count)
Walker 1-0; 1-1 (grounder on third pitch)
McCutchen 1-0; 2-0; 2-1 (ground out on 2-2 count)

Holliday 0-1; 1-1; 1-2 (walk after 8 pitch AB)
Adams 0-1; 1-1; 1-2 (ground out on 1-2 count)

Top of second

Morneau 0-1; 1-1; 2-1 (ground out on 2-2 count)
Byrd 0-1; 1-1; 1-2 (Ks on 2-2 count)
Alvarez 0-1; 1-1; 1-2 (ground out on 2-2 count)

Two innings . . . no 3 ball counts yet for Wainwright.

Bottom of second

Molina 0-1; 1-1; 2-1 (single on 2-1 count - at least it was ruled a single)
Jay 0-1; 1-1; 2-1 (single on 2-2 count)
Freese 1-0; 1-1 (FC ground out on third pitch)
Descalso (GIDP on first pitch)

Top of third

Martin 0-1; 0-2; 1-2 (Ks on 1-2 pitch)
Barmes 0-1; 0-2; (line out on third pitch)
Burnett 1-0; 1-1; 2-1 (ground out on 2-2 pitch)

Wainwright still hasn't had a 3 ball count - he's looking awfully strong
