Playoffs are here. Time to dust off Animal's Stars. We are not going to NEED any goats!

AWESOME, AMAZING GAME...Will give a full report of my observations after this post.

STARTER: Francisco Liriano was GREAT. 7 innings. Just 4 hits, 1 BB and 1 HBP. 5 K's. 1 Earned Run. He was in command from the start, with just 8 pitches in the first, 12 in the second, and 7 in the third, putting 9 up and 9 down.

WIN: Liriano gets the win, 1.0, 1.29 ERA in what we all hope is the first of many great postseason starts for the Bucs.

Honorable Mention: Marlon Byrd went 1-4 with a HR that got us going and 2 RBI. He got a easy RBI on a grounder to second that should have been a DP, but Phillips was going to be a hot dog as always and messed it up. Starling Marte went 2-5 and scored a run. Neil Walker went 2-5, with a double (against a lefty too), scored a run and drove in a run. Pedro gets an HM for coming through with a SF to score a run in what was still a tight ballgame at that point! Jason Grilli gets an HM too. It was not a save situation, but he came in and made very easy work of the Reds in the 9th to preserve the victory. And finally, an honorable mention goes out to the 10th man, the PNC Park crowd....the most amazing crowd I have EVER seen at a Pirates game.

Star #3: Cutch got on base 4 times, with 2 singles and 2 BBs, one intentional. He almost made an unbelievable catch in the 8th.

Star #2: Russell Martin. Solid behind the plate and working the pitcher as always. The man with the cold, cold bat for the better part of a couple months, hits two solo HR's, including a monster shot in the 7th to add an insurance run. He also had a single to go 3-4. On an ordinary night, he probably could have been the #1 star, but this was no ordinary night.

Star # 1: Liriano gets a clean sweep in this one. Not only was he awesome on the mound, he made at least one or two great defensive plays. He also had a hit and a sac bunt

STAR POINTS
Liriano 8
Martin 2
Cutch 1
Byrd .5
Marte .5
Waker .5
Pedro .5
Grilli .5
PNC Crowd .5

LOL

Good one Bucfan!

Those were Stargell Stars. Should we call these Animal's Asteroids?

You can call them anything you want, Animal.

Thanks for bringing back the Stars threads. I do hope you continue, just because I enjoy your take. Even when we lose. It's easy to give stars all around after a game like last night. You know, one of the first thing a newbie to this site notices is that something called Animal has it's own subforum. Let's keep it coming.

Lots of glory all around, but I'm happiest for Byrd, I think. 1250 games and he hits a HR in his first postseason AB.

Good call, though I feel great for Martin. He chose the Pirates over the Yankees this past offseason. He is the key offensive cog for the Wild Card Game win while the Yanks are watching from home. He has got feel pretty damn good about his decision!

Regarding Martin, he has been so damn good behind the plate this year after watching Barajas last year. Any offense he provides us is gravy. His average was down most of the year, but he certainly provided us with some very big hits. If his bat keeps going in the playoffs, the Bucs are going to make a deep run!

I am happy for him too. He was so pumped after his first homer(isn't that an amazing phrase) that the Announcers even commented that he couldn't even sit down. Pumps me up today!
