Gerrit Cole is warming up in the bullpen. Right now. The stadium is empty. He's not in the locker room celebrating. Is he the Game One starter?

Could be. Could also be to keep him stretched out since they don't plan on using him right away.

Thursday: A.J.
Friday: Charlie
Sunday: Frankie or Cole?
Monday: Frankie or Cole?

I would ask if I were there, but Mr. Cole does not want to be interrupted.

If Mr. Cole does not want to be interrupted, Mr. Cole is not interrupted.

Oh, welcome to the Pirates' 2013 Nos. 2 and 3 SP'ers ...

A.J. Burnett and Gerrit Cole.

The Cardinals want to punch a kitten.

I think it shapes up like this:

Burnett Game 1
Cole Game 2

Cole doing a bullpen now fits right into a start on Friday. SP's usually throw on the second day after a start, then rest two days, then start again.

This was apparently confirmed by Hurdle, or so I read elsewhere.

And Liriano game 3.

Right now, the Cardinals want to punch Dusty Baker in the throat.

Not that this feeling is unique, but in this instance, particularly understandable.

So, Burnett vs Wainwright, Cole vs Lynn, and Liriano vs Miller?

Hurdle had said a couple of weeks ago that he would stick with a 4 man rotation in the playoffs. I wonder if his thinking on that has changed. I'd be okay with holding Morton out as a long man/emergency starter. Locke, I think, is not on the 25 man roster for the playoffs.

If you go with a 3 man rotation you have to pitch Burnett on Monday on 3 days rest.

The Pirates announced Locke is shut down for the season.

I think Game 4 depends on the situation. Down 2-1. Probably AJ. Up 2-1. Probably Morton. The other options is to pitch Morton Game 3 if it is 1-1 and let Francisco pitch Game 4.

Honestly, I go with a three man rotation if at all possible. Morton simply does not match up well against the Cards.

Wholly agree on Morton. He matches up much better against free swinging Braves and against Dodgers' lineup.

From a practical perspective, however, if AJ pitches Thursday night, could he be ready by Monday (if necessary)? Four games are scheduled for Monday and it is entirely possible that, once again, the Bucs would draw the early start. I'm just not seeing that as being feasible. I think that, given the schedule, Morton is almost a "lock" to be pitching a game on Monday if the Pirates are playing.

I think AJ's situation depends to a large extent on how many pitches he throws on Thursday. Ideally the Bucs get a big lead and he comes out after 6 IP's and <90 pitches. If he throws well over 100 pitches, then I agree it will have to be Morton.

That, or my Weatherbug tells me rain on Sunday and Monday. I'll take a "Spahn and Sain, and pray for rain" moment.

How about, "Burnett, Cole, Liriano, and look at those clouds, paisano"??
