According to the Sullivan Report, Huntington all but admitted Monroe will be assuming Steve Pearce's roster spot and in fact the article portrays Huntington to be pretty down on Pearce. You all know I'm for signing somebody better than either one of these guys but if I had to choose one over the other, I'd definitely take Pearce over Monroe.

Craig Monroe: Your new starting RF.

There's your 8 pages.

Pearce hasn't brought much promise. He's just younger.
I think Pearce needs more time in the minors. The majors isn't a place for a 25 year old that could be something but has no standout stats that says throw him to the wolves in the majors.
Maybe if there is an injury or as a late season call-up but the best place for Steve Pearce this year is Triple-A

True. But given a choice between the two, I'd opt for Steve Pearce everytime.

But its basically like being given a choice between being repeatedly poked in the eyes or kicked in the balls.

Yep.I just say the Pirates arent't really thinking about doing anything big this year, and how i look at it is don't hurt a young player with that kind of potential and bring him to one of the worst situations in the major leagues.

If the season started today, the outfield would look like this:

RF - Moss
CF - McLouth
LF - Morgan

Two open spots on the bench to be filled by the likes of Pearce, Monroe, Minky?, FA? Ricky Henderson coming out of retirement? (btw, I'd take a 50 year old Henderson over Monroe).....

Don't forget about wildcards like McCutchen (bit of a stretch) and Tabata (big stretch) either.

My point is that Monroe isn't even a lock to make the 25 man roster. He's filler. A stopgap. A cheap insurance policy. AAA bound. A warm body.......etc.

P13 was right, we are making way to big of a deal out of this.

But also last year at this point we would have been saying Jason Michaels won't make the 25 man roster and that we would be filling that spot with a minor leaguer.
Moss is a question mark if he will be ready to start the season as a starter cause of his surgery in October. But i do think he will be ready.

Michaels was acquired in May 2008.

Last year at this time OF was the least of our concerns. Monroe could make the team as a 5th OFer, but I'd be shocked if he made it through the whole season.

I'm a big supporter of Pearce, but why does Craig Monroe make more sense than a 25 year old who has nothing left to prove at AAA?

Craig Monroe hasn't had an OPS+ above 100 since 2005, and last year hit .202/.274/.405 after hitting .219 the year before. He will now be turning 32. I would say he is only going to continue to get worse, while Pearce has a chance to improve.

Meanwhile, Pearce's stats over his past two stints in the major leagues are .266/.313/412--Numbers which are better than Monroe's past two years with the fact that Pearce is younger and you can hope for him to improve, and expect him to not play worse.

Some of those so-called "clutch" stats are pleasantly surprising.

Yes, I'm cherry-picking, and, no, I don't think John Russell is an Earl Weaver-style by-the-percentages manager. But I can take a quick look at his splits and easily envision a situation in which, given 150-200 selective PAs, Monroe could be a real asset to the team. Anything more than that, though, and I run out of silver lining for this particular cloud.

LOL. Slap, that is my favorite post of the short year so far. And I'm pretty sure you're partly serious..........

Now if we can only find a way to get Monroe an AB against Runelvys Hernandez, at Tropicana Field, in August, as a PH batting for our 4th hitter, working the count to 3-0, with men on 2nd and 3rd, 2 outs, in the 10th or later inning, on a ball lined to the OF, at night in a tie game,............. we'll still lose because Hansen will walk 6 in the bottom half of the inning.

:)
