WOW! POWERFUL!

I met Clint at an event at the Miracle League field in Murrysville earlier this year. Some of you may recall me posting about it. I watched him and his wife and kids, particularly his daughter. He was amazing!

Being a manager of a professional baseball team is so much more than filling out a line-up card and changing pitchers. Baseball, my coach used to say, "is a game of failure." Having a man like Clint Hurdle running your dugout makes your team prepared for that challenge.

He seems to be one of the most genuinely good people in the game. And his remarkable attitude has clearly won over the Pirates - all those late-inning comebacks, 14 inning games? That attitude starts in the dugout.

Oh, he's certainly a master at dealing with players. I do believe that this has a significant effect and probably outweighs what I also think they lose on many on his in-game decisions.

EDIT: Just finished. Great article.

Jordy Mercer this season among SS's with at least 350 plate appearances:

.285 BA - 3rd best among NL shortstops
.336 OBP - 3rd best among NL shortstops
.435 slugging - 3rd best among NL shortstops
.771 OPS - 3rd best among NL shortstops
.150 ISO - 3rd best among NL shortstops
wRC+ of .114 - you guessed it, 3rd best among NL shortstops

He quietly had a really, REALLY good offensive season. Yes, I concur that it was boosted substantially by his platooning in the second half and his mauling of LH pitching, but still ... good production.

A always love a good comeback story...in life even more so than sports. He's admitted he was a raging alcoholic, it cost him a couple marriages, etc. Now seems like he's in the best place of his life. Great marriage, does wonderful charitable work, seems like the most positive guy you'd ever meet. Easy to root for people like this.

Touching. I learned more about him in that article than I had ever known.

Thanks for posting the numbers. Mercer was one of my favorite prospects for years (long before the FreeJordy movement), got to see him a few times in Indianapolis when he was first promoted to AAA. I like(d) his unusual frame for a SS, heard good things about his defense, and he started hitting his best in the high minors. I was also optimistic about his power potential though was a mildly disappointed that a lot of that vanished in AAA. I'm obviously thrilled with the season he had, though obviously the splits are troublesome.

I think you have to be at least somewhat optimistic about serious defensive improvements coming into next season. He was after all a rookie replacing arguably the best defensive SS in the league. Not saying that's excusable to have a huge gaffe or two in the heat of a pennant race, but it is what it is. Oh, and it sure would have been nice if Mercer had gotten some regular reps two years ago in preparation instead of rotting on the bench for 4 months when even a non-SS was utilized as the primary back-up SS in that time (Harrison).

As Bucfan noted in another thread, these Pirates love and respect their skipper.

Thanks for leading us to the NLDS, Clint Hurdle. We're happy to ride on this Pirate Ship with you at the helm...

I wish that I had the skills to photo-shop a picture of Clint with an eye-patch!
