You are proposing we build a team based on who the fan favorites are?

I, myself, would value on-field abilities, but that is just me.

He isnt all that expensive and was a huge part of our team last year. Think what is best for the team not keep thinking...next year...next year....next year. We could get doug at a decent price and he is a great team leader for these young guys.

I don't care what kind of leader he is just like I don't care if he is a fan favorite. The only reason the Pirates should be talking to Doug is if they think he has the ability to play baseball well enough to help them win games. Then, if the answer to that is yes (and I think it is...in a bench-player capacity), they should offer him the amount of money that they think the talent level is worth. My guess is that earlier in the offseason, Dougie thought he might be worth a little more than what the Pirates were going to pay a bench player. We'll see what happens.

But for the love of Jesus, we should be looking to sign talented athletes, not goddamn motivational speakers.

If Doug overestimated his value, he isn't the only one this off season.

I do expect Doug to keep his word and give the Bucs the last shot at signing him.

If they're hiring motivational speakers, I want this guy...

He's got a van and Pittsburgh has a river...hmmm...

What I don't understand in all this is that Dougie seems to almost be pleading to come back and the Pirates are countering by saying he won't get the ABs he is looking for. To me, he has value because we know what we are getting with him, he sounds willing to give a local discount, which should be cheap because he doesn't have any other offers. Hell, make him an offer and let him play first base until June until Rip Van LaRoche wakes up.

I don't see Minky giving a discount to anyone unless it's a contender. He's not from Pittsburgh, so a "local" discount seems anomalous.

Well, we won't know until we make an offer. I'm just sayin'. We keep hearing that the door is still open, but nobody is walking through it. If we truly aren't interested in him, say it and move on.

I think they are interested in him, but he wants more at-bats. When he realizes he is not going to get what he wants, he will go to the Pirates and sign. He knows what he will get in Pittsburgh and I think he did like it there. Let's face it. People get hurt. Minky will get at-bats, just conditional at-bats.
