I chuckle a little everytime I see that Zach Duke is on Cincy's roster.

OK.. now how long has MLB allowed starting pitchers to not be on game day rosters? This is news to me. I'm looking
at our roster and thinking we sure have a lot of position players..

This is new...since the extra Wild Card and one day playoff was set. You set your playoff roster for the SERIES...and since this is just a one game series, you don't need all those pitchers on the roster who are definitely not going to pitch. Just the starter and one emergency guy!

So is Cole the guy if Frankie gets in trouble early?

Yep. Gerrit Cole to the rescue. That was the point of my Good Liriano? Bad Liriano? post.

I think it's a smart safety net to have in place.

GO BUCS!!!!

J_C_Steel has arrived in Pittsburgh and is preparing for his first playoff baseball game EVER.

I haven't been this nervous since Super Bowl XLIII (which I also attended)...

Lineups are out . . . Hurdle going with defense at SS and starting Barmes. Can't say that I'm surprised. Runs could be at a premium tonight and . . . if you look at it from a strict "handedness" perspective . . . Mercer's bat doesn't play that much better than Barmes' bat. And, I envision Liriano pitching inside to the right handed hitters and outside to the lefties - with the goal of having a lot of opportunities for Barmes and McCutchen to make outs. If that's the game plan from the mound, Barmes is, IMO, the right call at SS.

Here's my key . . . Liriano's first two innings. There are going to tight stomachs out there tonight. Getting through the meat of the Reds' lineup once without any damage should provide a huge injection of confidence for the Pirates and a major source of consternation for the Reds' offense. I want to see Liriano coast and plant giant seeds of doubt into the Reds' hitters' heads.

If the Pirates can push across a run or two early, I think that the Reds are ripe to get frustrated quickly and they can be start pressing if they fall behind early. That will, of course, only inure to Liriano's benefit as I see the Reds chasing "his" pitches.

While this may not come as a shock to anyone . . . if there's a chance to play for an early run . . . I go for it. Break the ice. Put up a run on the scoreboard. Get past that psychological hurdle. It should loosen them up a bit. Getting an early run against Cueto should only serve to bolster their confidence in their ability to succeed against him. Plus, the crowd will be on fire if the Bucs go up early.

Marte leads off with a hit? Send him. Have Walker bunt him to third. Let Cutch have the chance to drive in the run - even with an out. If they pitch around him . . . send Cutch as well. As Hurdle would put it . . . "run like a man who's broke."

Yeah, I know that some will crucify me for that line of thought . . . but . . . sudden death . . . low run environment . . . that's my take and I'm sticking to it.

I'd like an aggressive approach early as well.

Exactly Mr. 9.. we need to play Chuck Tanner ball. I'll go out on a limb and say we won't hit six homers tonight.

Just have 18 hit a dinger in the first again. Works like a charm.
