The Texas Rangers are exploring trade options for five-time All-Star shortstop Michael Young at the player's request after he became upset about the team's plan to move him to third base.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Sunday night during a hastily called conference call that the team has looked into trade possibilities but remains hopeful Young will remain in Texas.

"Our desire is for Michael to play third base," Daniels said. "Obviously though, he's got to buy into what we're doing."

The Rangers would like to move Young to third to make room for highly touted prospect Elvis Andrus at shortstop. The 20-year-old Andrus came to Texas in July 2007 in the trade that sent Mark Teixeira to Atlanta.

THAT would be good news. Sadly, it will never happen.

Michael Young is a good player, but despite his Gold Glove, most defensive metrics say he was a below-average defender. He's also turning 32, a poor age for a middle infielder, and is coming off of his worst season since 2003.

His offensive numbers even on an off year are better than Jack's...

The question would be what would Texas want to get to Pittsburgh?...And that is where the problem is...

But is an aging Michael Young at 16 million a year worth it? If Michael Young was 25 years old, I would say yes, he is worth trying to find a match. At this stage, that's a quarter of our payroll for a slight upgrade.

Jack is a much better SS, and a better value. And, Young wouldn't have light Austin air to hit in either.

In what world do you live in where Jack Wilson is a better shortstop in any way, shape or form than Michael Young?
I would take a 33 year old Michael Young over a Jack Wilson in his prime 10 days a week.

The Rangers play in Arlington, not Austin.

I'm not arguing that we should obtain Young (in fact, I don't want him regardless of cost), but my suspicion is that he wouldn't cost $16M regardless of which team acquires him. Tejas is going to have to eat quite a bit of that salary if they hope to move him.

Considering that "Air" and "Austin" do not rhyme, I don't understand your point.

Jack Wilson in his prime was better than a 31 year old Michael Young. Check the numbers and then factor in the ballparks in which they play respectively. Then note Jack's superior defense.

Is Young better than Jack now? Maybe, but probably not enough to be worth the trouble. Young has declined considerably since turning 30.

Austin Air... kinda rolls off your tongue. Not like Arlington Air, or Texas Air, or Ft. Worth Air...

All of them are a launching pad that he wouldn't have here, and I'm not giving up Jack's glove for that.

I dont think the Pirates would do a trade for Young anyway, but what if you are bringing in Young and trying to move him back to 2nd to take Freddy's place?

Then you have two complaining players instead of one.

Further, moving Young to 2nd would lower his value. Young's defense at 2nd was nothing to write home about, and moving Young to 2nd requires Young to hit better in order to maintain his value. Again, even in that scenario, I don't think acquiring Young is worth the trouble.

Young changed his mind now...

Quote:
Young said Thursday that he is agreeing to the Rangers request to move to third base and is no longer asking to be traded. That will allow the Rangers to go with 20-year-old rookie Elvis Andrus at shortstop.

Young, a five-time All-Star shortstop, made the decision after conversations with his agent, Dan Lozano, club president Nolan Ryan and manager Ron Washington. He has not spoken with general manager Jon Daniels, who instigated the move in a meeting with Young back in December.

At the time, Young was opposed to the move and he still feels that way. He made it clear that he doesn't feel it's time to switch positions. But he said he is willing to agree to the switch so that he and the Rangers can move forward, put the controversy behind them and get ready for Spring Training.
