Tabata is either afraid to run hard or the injuries have completely taken his speed.

Justin Morneau works an eight-pitch walk.

Garrett Jones then grounds out on two pitches.

So tell me again how Morneau is not an upgrade to Jones?

Because we're only allowed to look at OPS, Bucfan. Duh.

First of all nobody said Morneau was not an upgrade over Jones. The term used most often was marginal upgrade. Morneau did seal the victory Monday night with his defense.

Second, OPS is a much better indicator than judging by a single at bat.

I'm not judging by a single at bat; I'm using OBP and defense, primarily.

Morneau's now hitting .271/.373/.329 as a Pirate (.702 OPS). That's not great, but it's not bad. And that OBP of .373 is very nice. He doesn't make a ton of outs.

Not to piss in Morneau's cornflakes, but a hit would have been much more significant---especially when taking into consideration that this ended up being a two-run game...

Still, good on him for coming through in some capacity.

Yes, they did. Several in fact said that Morneau was no better than Jones.

A hit would have required him to swing at a pitch that was not a strike once the count went to 2-2.

Swinging at pitches that are not strikes worked fine for Yogi Berra and Manny Sanguillen, and is working well for Ichiro.

The rest of the universe, however, generally makes outs by swinging at pitches that are not strikes.

Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of outs.

To be fair I believe the pitcher gets that ball 3 a called strike 9 out of 10 times (e.x. the last pitch of the game to Marte). The WGN broadcast's Range Resources strike zone showed it as a strike that caught the corner, and a replay actually showed the umpire flinch as if he was about to ring him up before changing his mind. I was personally surprised Morneau got the call when it happened.

That being said, I'm not disagreeing at all with the Morneau > Jones thing or dissatisfaction with drawing a BB there. But in that case I think it was a gamble on such a borderline pitch and fortunately it worked in Morneau's favor.

I'm really not worried. The Reds scored zero runs against Dice-K, lost 2 out of 3 to the Mets at home and they think they are playoff contenders? Yeah right. Bucs roll because they scored 2 on the road.
