Today's Gazette discusses the difficult position that Hurdle is in for the post season roster. Does he include Grilli who has not performed anywhere near his past since returning. Is he able to get it back soon enough? And I guess is he going to be good enough to replace Melancon? My guess is that he will be on the roster but not as the appointed closer. Melancon has done so well he would be hard pressed to improve on those performances.
But I return to the subject I have already brought up. Marte has yet to bat and reportedly will be in pain for the remainder of the season. We need to win now to position ourselves for success in the playoffs. Should we be risking offense by inserting Marte in a rehab with pain situation? Again his substitute, Tabata has done very well. My guess is Hurdle will play Marte but I have strong reservations.

Tuff calls for the coach and decisions which may well determine the remaining games and post season.

What do you think????

Grilli is not a tough call. You can't be sentimental. And unless Melancon starts crapping the bed, you don't touch the closer.

Grilli has another 12 games to earn a roster spot. If he can get through a couple outings without damage, then I think he becomes a set-up guy. If he still struggles, you keep him buried for blowout time or keep him off completely.

Marte is batting leadoff tonight. So there's that.

My take . . .

Pitchers for playoffs (if Pirates make a divisional playoff):
Starters -
Liriano
Burnett
Cole
Morton

Bullpen -
Left Handed Pitchers
Wilson
Locke
Watson
Right Handed Pitchers
Farnsworth
Melancon
Gomez
Grilli

That leaves Morris and Mazzaro on the outside looking in. I'd go with only 11 pitchers.

Position Players:
OF -
McCutchen
Byrd
Tabata
Marte
Jones

IF -
Morneau
Sanchez
Walker
Mercer
Barmes
Alvarez

C -
Martin
Sanchez

That leaves one slot for Pie, Buck, Harrison or Snider. At this moment, I'd lean towards Snider. If Alvarez suffers a minor injury and they need a replacement, they could go with Mercer at 3B as a stopgap.

I WOULD GO WITH AHARRISON AS TH LAST BENCH GUY, HIS SPEED AND FLXIBLITY WOULD BE HELPFUL TO HAVE IN A LATE INNING SITUATION

Was Farnsworth on the August 31 roster? There's no way I'd leave off Mazzaro the way he's pitched all year.

Marte found a way to get on base twice last night ( once even called a hit). Give him credit for his effort and let him play but he hasn't hit the ball yet.
