Wrong. It's Chet Steadman.

"Rocket"

(Aside: how awesome would it have been if, as his intro song, "Rocket" came out to a Buddy Holly beat? Obviously that sort of thing wasn't happening in the early 90's, but... That would have been SUPER meta.)

This might have been discussed, but was there any reason Morneau took one of the most famous numbers in Pittsburgh sports?

He doubled his previous number with the Twins (33) since 33 is retired for Honus Wagner.

I believe he also is from Canada and a Lemieux fan so thought it was a great tribute.

Great win. Way to set the tone on the final homestand.

84 and 61. Front runner for manager of the year. Questionable?

Jim Tracy was Manager of the Year once.

Thanks for that info.

Mercer, Cutch, and Locke were the keys to this one, folks.

Great to see Jeff Locke return to his early season form. He was painting corners, inducing some weak contact, and working out of a little trouble. Vintage pre-All Star Break Locke. Wonderful to see.

McCutchen was his normal MVP-level self, hitting the ball hard twice (one double and a lineout), walking, and making a great defensive play in center.

Mercer played superb defense and went 2-4 with a double (off of a RHP) and an RBI. For those keeping track, he's now hitting .282/.333/.413 (.746 OPS) with good overall defense. That's a solid contributor.

Yep, Mr Backup QB has proved he belongs. I am greatly enjoying his year. Plus, he is our best hitter vs lefties, bar only Harrison's SSS season thus far.

Count me in the camp that says it was a dumb move to start Morneau against a lefty. Fortunately we won in spite of that.

Is Neverett driving anyone else crazy with the way he pronuounces Morneau's name? He puts the accent on the first syllable, and says it over and over and over and over. Makes me want to commit a serious crime.

And another thing..

I don't even like that Morneau is on this team. Jones is the one that deserves to be out there. He paid his dues and now he gets screwed over again by a player that is only marginally better than him.

This isn't a fraternity. Players get playing time based upon their performance, not years of service.

With Gaby's .991 OPS against LHP you might as well mention him rather than Harrison's 36 ABs. I agree though, Mercer's season has been great to see and it's nice having a trio of lefty mashers considering the weaknesses against them of Alvarez, Walker, etc.

It's not that I necessarily disagree with you re: Morneau (I had virtually no reaction to his acquisition and think he and Jones were basically interchangeable for a month) but I'm struggling to figure out what Jones has done to "deserve" to play as you say, and definitely not following the "got screwed over again" line at all.

Jones has been given every opportunity to succeed on this team for 5 years now, he was handed the starting 1B job and played all season there three years ago despite the extreme platoon splits and not hitting LHP at all. In a platoon role he still ended up getting whole season's worth of ABs the next few years due to being able to play both 1B/RF. This year was no different, he came in as part of the 1B platoon and while Gaby held up his end of the platoon excellently, Jones was terrible despite facing RHP 95% of the time. An OPS barely over .700 isn't going to cut it for a player who's sole role is to crush righties. Not to mention the HR numbers are way down and the K rate is up. And he has been worse in the second half. I'm not arguing that Morneau is a vastly superior option, don't get me wrong, but in no way does Jones "deserve" his playing time. Morneau is still hitting RHP well, Jones isn't.

I liked the Morneau move and who starts, starts. Either way it deepened the bench and gave this team another left handed bat off the bench. Tabata and Jones will provide a nice right, left handed combination during the playoffs for outfield depth. Tabata, Jones, Barmes, aren't superstars and players have taken their positions.

Jones has been here for five years and has performed well for the most part. He's having a bad year but I'm not convinced that he's no longer capable. He has always been streaky.

He's the guy I know, he's the guy I like, and he's the guy I've been rooting for for 5 years. I want to see him out there enjoying this success after all these struggles, not sitting the bench while some stranger who is only marginally better takes his playing time.

It has nothing to do with being in a fraternity.

Being marginally better is still being better. In such a tight race for the division crown, I'll take whatever marginal advantage I can get.
