Morneau is not running up pitch counts.

Not necessarily. When I see Cutch on second or third, I prefer my cleanup guy get a hit or fly ball, not draw a walk.

Don't chase, get on base, and trust the guy hitting behind you.

Morneau's OBP with the Pirates is .364. If that continues, it will bode well for the Pirates' offense.

Going Morneau-Byrd-Alvarez should allow the latter two to drive in a lot of runs down the stretch.

I think that's really looking at Byrd and Alvarez's outlook optimistically. Morneau is questionable to score on even a double and I don't think a Byrd-Alvarez combo is going to be stringing much together.

Can't we just admit that Morneau is washed up but it was still a solid gamble and might wind up paying off?

Cherry picking one aspect of far more objective comprehensive stats is trying really hard to shine a turd.

You're kidding, right SA? These guys will never admit that. I like Morneau. He has been a great player. He was a great veteran addition to this team for the stretch run and playoffs. But he is NOT an every day starting 1b any more. I still believe that GJ would be better for us day in and day out.

You'd rather have a player fly out with McCutchen on second than draw a BB?

The only way to force pitcher to throw hittable pitches is to avoid swinging at the unhittable ones. You want hits with RISP? Then don't poo-poo the walks.

Yeah, because that would obviously be the outcome!

Uh, what?

Did you not just say in the post I quoted that if McCutchen were on second, you would prefer the clean-up hitter get a hit or fly ball instead of draw a BB? And if a "fly ball" is something different than a "hit" as you stated wouldn't that make it a fly out?

Well, he only went 1-2 against Garza. Morneau went 3-3 against lefties out of the Rangers' bullpen.

But Morneau's OBP of .421 does no good. I would rather he swing at pitches in the dirt so fiercely that he frightens the opposition.
