Pitch Liriano on Wednesday or push him back to Friday?

Excellent question.

Many factors to consider.

If the Bucs have already won 81 (or 82), probably push him back. If they're on the cusp of either, you can see Hurdle rolling with his 'Ace' to christen the moment.

It's easy to say 'push Liriano back to Friday' [to face the Cards], as they clearly struggle vs. Lefties. However, don't the Cardinals do/play better at Busch than on the road (specifically at PNC)? And/or, don't the Bucs usually play better at PNC than on the road (and particularly not well at Miller)?

You'd hate for the Cards to gain any sort of confidence toward the idea of facing Liriano... so preserving him for a potential one-game playoff (if it came to that and if the Bucs do wrap up the tie-breaker) seems best for the 'psychological edge'.

Probably pitch him Wednesday. It should probably be win #81 or 82, a distinction that Liriano has earned to become a prominent part of.

Whatever lines him up to pitch more at home. Looks at his home/away splits (which I realize are skewed a bit by the atrocious Colorado start...but still)

Home 8-1, 1.61 ERA and WHIP 0.98
Road 7-5, 3.68 ERA and WHIP of 1.36 (without Colorado game.... 7-4, 2.56 ERA and WHIP of 1.21 which is still good)

No matter what, I feel comfortable with the ball in Frankie's hand!

His only home loss, by the way, was June 1st to Cincinnati. He pitched 6 innings, gave up 4 hits, 1BB and only 1 run in a 2-0 loss. Unbelievable!!!

It might play out, if you are going one game playoff, that you look at the opponent. If Cards, yeah I want Liriano. If Reds, not quite so sure. Might go Burnett. Might.

I REALLY want him to win 20 games. To think how much time he missed and that he leads the league in wins is amazing. Throw out that game in Colorado and he challenges Kershaw for Cy Young.

Don't get too crazy haha. Frankie is having a great season but no one is even going to come close to challenging Kershaw this year.
