Looked like Liriano could have had a complete game but out after 8 with less than 100 pitches.
Yes, he deserved to go all the way after that pitching.
No, he's become the stud and you don't want to risk his arm when the game is in hand.
No, Melancon needed to get another close for his head.
Yes, Bucs need to show loyalty to their guys.

What do you think????

Not sure how much one more inning would matter for Liriano as far as a rest point of view is concerned. Also not really sure how much he really needed the CGSO opportunity. Managers' call and you go with it. Best for him to not take it personally and come out next time and do the same.

I think Hurdle did the right thing for the TEAM. Individual honors don't matter. It's all about the team. Melancon needed the work. And in the post game interview, Hurdle said that Liriano told him that he was done, that he left it all on the field.

But I know where you are coming from..a shutout would have looked good for Liriano.

My thought was to pull him. We have a much more important agenda this year than worrying about a complete game. If Liriano really made that comment it made it a no-brainer for Clint.

I wanted him to finish too, but I looked over at my wife and said, "Hey' when's the last time Melancon pitched?" Last Friday against the Giants? I can't remember. (Milwaukee series, blowout win, shutout loss, see-saw offensive game), Giants Sunday, shoutout loss, Saturday, blowout loss early). When did he pitch last?

He had last pitched on August 23rd against the Padres. For that reason alone I agree with getting him an inning.

Agree. I am too lazy to look it up but didn't Frankie have that off game in CO after he went about 120 pitches for a complete game? I was fine taking him out particularly because Melancon had not pitched in a week.

If Liriano did indeed say he was done, then it's a no brainer. But lets say for the sake of discussion that Liriano was fine and under 100 pitches and ready to go. Why would it be a necessity for Melancon to pitch in the game 'to get an inning'? If he needs to keep the arm loose and stay in game mode, why couldn't he just throw 30 pitches in the bullpen? I never really understand the 'he NEEDED to pitch to get an inning'...or 'He hasn't pitched in a week'....they have a mound in the pen and a bullpen catcher...seems like a hollow excuse to me.

Practice is a good way to stay fresh but in my experience doesn't even come close to replicating the true in game experience.

Why have him finish? Tomorrow they'll be adding as many relievers as they want to, but they only have one Liriano. 95 pitches is enough.
