Really? You propose going without a fourth starter?

As long as you possibly can, yes. If you need a fourth starter, you could potentially use a piggy-back arrangement. Regardless, given that he's lost his arm slot and he's flagging late in the year, Jeff Locke wouldn't be my choice for the fourth playoff starter in any event.

Hopefully, Wandy Rodriguez will take that slot.

I don't think that Wandy will be available in time.

Locke is a victim of circumstance, I think. During the first half of the year, the defense behind him gave up very few hits. Now they are giving up hits in droves. Locke clearly isn't helping himself with his strikeout rate dropping and his walk rate rising, but I don't think he's totally at fault for his 7.94 ERA in August.

That said, I'd probably pick Cole over the rest of the field for a fourth starter.

I'm worried that Cole will be gassed by October. But I'd make him the pick if he's got something left in the tank.

What was Jeff Locke going to be in the playoffs, anyway? The third left-handed pitcher out of the bullpen, behind Tony Watson and Justin Wilson?

The playoff rotation right now is Francisco Liriano, A.J. Burnett, and Charlie Morton. Lather, rinse, repeat. Cole and Gomez can be the long men in the 'pen.

Unlikely, but I was talking about the story. Guy is picked for the AS Game, then falls apart and is left off of his team's playoff roster. That's a big story.

The reason the defense is giving up more hits is because more of the balls hit to them are rockets now, and his walk rate has moved into the realm of the ridiculous. He's fallen from throwing at 91-93 to throwing at 88-90. That's Maholm/Duke territory.

That tends to happen when hitters don't respect a pitcher's ability to throw pitchers over the plate. He is missing spots and leaving pitches over the heart of the plate. MLB hitters will feast on that.

Absolutely, 88 mph meatballs. He doesn't have the velocity to get away with busting righties inside right now, and he's back to trying to pick at the corners again, like he was doing last September. When he misses and gets behind he dumps one right down the middle.
