It's really a non-story. Altoona's season is coming to a close, that's why they were shipped there. They can come back sooner than if they were sent to Indianapolis. With Indy they would have had to wait the 10-day minimum. They'll be up Sept. 3.

Good move. Whoever starts Sunday will give them a better chance to win than Locke.

It is a HUGE story. Jeff Locke cannot appear on the post-season roster now.

He can if (and when) someone goes on the DL. That's a situation where Lambo jams a toe or T Sanchez strains shoulder.

What's the rotation number during the playoffs, 3, 4, 5 man? I usually have no interest in baseball come October.

No he can't. Only players on the ML roster on August 31st, plus those on disabled lists, are eligible for the post season roster.

"Under Major League Rule 40 (a), the pool of players eligible for the postseason consists of the 25 players on the active roster and any players on the disabled, bereavement, suspended or military lists before midnight ET on August 31."

Locke and Sanchez were both just dropped from the post season roster.

Neither player will be automatically eligible to compete in the postseason, but either could be added to the playoff roster if the Pirates place a player on the disabled list after Aug. 31.

They have to get Bud's approval to do that.

I heard the approval committee includes Bobby Cox, Francisco Cabrera, Randy Marsh, and Jerry Meals.

Instead of demoting him, they should have put him on the DL to rest his "tired arm."

Should of gone to a 6 man rotation after the break.

What was Jeff Locke going to be in the playoffs, anyway? The third left-handed pitcher out of the bullpen, behind Tony Watson and Justin Wilson?

The playoff rotation right now is Francisco Liriano, A.J. Burnett, and Charlie Morton. Lather, rinse, repeat. Cole and Gomez can be the long men in the 'pen.

Really? You propose going without a fourth starter?

As long as you possibly can, yes. If you need a fourth starter, you could potentially use a piggy-back arrangement. Regardless, given that he's lost his arm slot and he's flagging late in the year, Jeff Locke wouldn't be my choice for the fourth playoff starter in any event.

Hopefully, Wandy Rodriguez will take that slot.

I don't think that Wandy will be available in time.

Locke is a victim of circumstance, I think. During the first half of the year, the defense behind him gave up very few hits. Now they are giving up hits in droves. Locke clearly isn't helping himself with his strikeout rate dropping and his walk rate rising, but I don't think he's totally at fault for his 7.94 ERA in August.

That said, I'd probably pick Cole over the rest of the field for a fourth starter.

Based on the article on Pirates Prospects, I don't think that's true. Here are a few excerpts from their lengthy analysis that does a great job explaining all the roster nuances:

1. On August 31, each team will send a list of names to Major League Baseball for postseason purposes.

The names will players on the following lists:

■MLB Active Roster (a.k.a. the 25-man roster)
■Major League Disabled List (7-day, 15-day, 60-day)
■Bereavement List
■Suspended List

Any player on one of these lists is automatically eligible to be on a postseason roster, unless a player on the 60-day DL has been inactive for fewer than 60 days, or similarly with the 15-day DL

3. If a disabled list player is not able to play in a postseason round, his spot becomes a “flex spot.”

The Pirates have three almost certain flex spots from their 60-day disabled list: Phil Irwin, Jeff Karstens, Michael McKenry. Their names will appear on the list the team sends to MLB, and they are useful because they can be replaced on a postseason roster by players whose names are not on the list. More on that in a moment.

Besides them, other flex spots may come from James McDonald or Wandy Rodriguez, if neither one returns to pitch in September, or from any player that gets hurt in September and is out for the season.

5. Any player in the organization on Aug. 31 (before 11:59 p.m. ET) is eligible to be added for a playoff roster.

This is where the flex spots come in handy. As long as a player is not on the Disqualified List, Ineligible List, or Restricted List, he can join a postseason roster.
