Starling Marte will not need surgery, but it will be two weeks before he said he can start swinging again

Well, that explains the urgency of the Byrd acquisition. If Marte isn't back for the next two Cardinals series, the Pirates needed a guy to plug in.

Makes much more sense. Always liked Byrd anyway but he becomes essential without Marte for several more weeks.

Marte's absence cost the Pirates two runs last night on Ramirez's "double" off of Tabata's glove. That hurts.

That ball was smoked, as was most of Rameriz's shots last night.

Only Marte's SUPERIOR defense would have caught that ball. That Tabata even GOT to it was above average. Your normal LFer would have been chasing that ball off the fence.

Yeah, I just watched that and expected to see something that looked like Matt Holliday. I don't think it's even a definite that Marte would have had it, depending on where he was playing.

Not sure if that is an attempt at a knock on Tabata or not...but that was no fault of his. He made a great effort just to even have a chance.

Marte is much faster and more athletic and I think he would have caught it, but Ape is right that positioning would be key, because the ball was smoked.

Marte is a difference maker, no doubt about it.

I don't disagree with you....but disagree if anyone would criticize Tabata for not making the play.

Yeah - I think JC calling it a "double" is quite extreme.

Fair enough. That ball was hit hard. I still believe that Marte gets a better jump and uses his better speed to snag that ball.

I'm hearing reports that he was swinging a bat today.
