as of saturday 08/17 both the bucs and dodgers are sitting atop their divisions with identical 72-50 (.590) records, tied for the second best record in baseball. but these two teams have arrived at 72-50 quite differently, with the pirates playing relatively consistently throughout the season, and the dodgers playing scorchingly hot baseball in the last two months. assuming the season ended this way, with the bucs having played consistent .590 ball over the course of the season, and the dodgers having finished red hot to match the bucs' year-end record, would one team have an advantage over the other? does consistency trump a a red hot finish? or is it the other way around?
