Wow. 32 homers and 96 rbi doesnt get you much these days. And I thought the Burrell signing was strangely low. 32/96 is worth less than Jack Wilson next year. The contract is gonna have to be laced with incentives, dont you think, or this is truly bizarre. And while I applaud the direction our team is going in, as long as prices are this low it would be nice if the Bucs made some attempt to act like a major league team in '09.

Thats what you get when you are 38 and hit .236 and .247 and is a below average glove...I'm sure the economy helped decrease the value too

All true, but come on. He still is coming off a productive power year and 4.5 is nothing more than pocket change. Im not surprised he took a hit, but this is incredible. Nick Punto signed for 4.

It really goes to the fact the Jack isn't worth the seven million he'll get this year. I know he's popular with many fans but we all know he's not the answer for us.

This contract is part of the bigger picture with the economy.

Outside of the Yankees, who have a money machine in the form of their new stadium, teams are being smart with their contract offers and looking for bargains wherever they can.

And let's be honest guys, there's not a fan out there who's unhappy with the fact that sports salaries are coming back down to Earth. I hope that this trend continues for the next several seasons.

EDIT: Pat Burrel got 16 millions over two seasons and he was seen as one of the top Tier 2 guys out there with Dunn and Abreu.

If Billy Beane hit this one right, Giambi could be to this team what Frank Thomas was to Beane's 2006 A's. I think they are going to be dangerous, especially since I don't think the Angels will be quite as good this year. Beane really knows when to strike.

A's young starting pitching will really have to step up.
