We have guys like this every year....tear it up a year in minors...looks like they can come up and do it here. The fans are yelling for him. Rarely, do they come up and be successful.

Last year, it was Jeff Clement.

Year before that Bowker..

Matt Hague last year too.

I think the term "high-probability hitter" carries weight.

I think Hague was more two years ago when Overbay was the 1B option at the time. Hague actually broke the camp with the team last year but no when really cared for him to return after he went 5-70 in the majors.

Presley when he had his huge year in AAA two years ago I think was when the first big wave of fan support came about with a lot he social media stuff, etc.

I think it was mainly just Animal who was clamoring for Clement last year.

But yeah, it's an AAAA player discussion.

I agree 100% that I thought Clement deserved a look last year...and it wasn't just me.

But unless these guys come up, and actually get a chance to play, it's all for nothing!

Brandon Moss is another guy that had a monster year at AAA and the Bucs did not give him a good look. He is one of the few to go elsewhere and actually have some success.

I was on the Clement bandwagon, mainly since he is a fellow Iowan ;) 8-)

I think it is important to give guys like this a look because it helps with future signings. How many of these AAAA type guys won't sign a minor league contract with a team knowing that no matter what, they won't get a shot??

Me too, I was calling for both Clement and Bowker to get their shots. Which they did and we know how that turned out.

But still with these power guys you have to keep giving them chances. It makes sense to try it, even if it doesn't work. Especially if you have a hole that the guy might be able to fill.

That simply isn't true to say that the Pirates didn't give Moss an opportunity. He was one of the marquee players that came over in the Bay trade and was given the playing time to try to succeed - he spent parts of 3 years with the Pirates and in over 600 PAs posted a .667 OPS with very little power. He was worse than his replacement at the time, Lastings Milledge. Furthermore in 2010, despite the power he had a low BA in AAA. It's complete retrospective speculation to say that he wasn't given a shot because he later achieved success in Oakland. It's simply that he was given a shot, failed, and managed to succeed a couple of years later.

Garrett Jones was a "AAAA" guy too, until we gave him a shot.

Hopefully Lambo is at least that and hopefully more.

1. True.
2. This isn't any year, this is 21.
3. Something's gotta give, right?

Jeff Clement had a history last year that suggested he wouldn't do much.

Lambo does not. Yet.

Six years of mostly mediocre play or less in the minors is not a history?

Well, I meant specifically in 2000 when he was putting up the good numbers at AAA and got a pathetic 27 plate appearances with the Bucs while Lastings Milledge was stinking up the joint in Pittsburgh and even WORSE guys were on the bench. While his BA was not great at AAA, it was .266 with .800 OPS and 22 HR and 96 RBI in 136 games.

But then again, I would argue that 500 at bats over 3 seasons is not really much of a chance to see what a guy could do...especially a good with a very good history of success at AAA.

Umm... free Jameson Taillon!

Free Ivan DeJesus Jr.!

And what about D'Arnaud? He runs really fast, so his scrappiness quotient is off the charts! Every contending team needs more scrappiness.

I'll be interested to see what DeJesus can do in ST next year. His numbers in the minors are fairly similar to Mercer's and if nothing else it's another potential utility/bench option.

In the major leagues? No, it is not. Some players are late bloomers.

Jeff Clement had a major league history, after he had excelled in the minors. This is not even a comparison.

First of all, Lambo couldn't be any worse at the plate than Presley. Presley has failed more times than not, and quite frankly I'm tired of seeing him make out after out after out.

Secondly, how bad can Lambo be with his first name being Andrew? :D

I'm tired of seeing him make out as well. GROSS

Let's face it, EVERY player fails more often than not, right?? The guys who FAIL 7 out of 10 times for their career and Hall of Fame candidates!

Methinks Animal didn't get the joke.

Haaaaa...no he didn't. Animal, was just saying I don't want to watch Lambo make out with anybody on the bench.

Clement was also handed the starting 1B job out of spring training in 2010 when it wasn't even his natural position. He got a chance with the Pirates he likely wouldn't have had anywhere else. But, as is the case with Moss, Animal would like to ignore what they did at the major league level and continue to say the Pirates didn't give them a chance based on what they proceeded to do in AAA after their demotion.
