but............................

I still have a bad taste in my mouth with how this guy left us and let us down.

He signed one of the first million dollar guaranteed contracts.

He did drugs, which affected his weight, attitude and performance

He brought drug dealers into the clubhouse.

He then got his act together for Marge Schott's Reds.

Don't count me 100% in the Pro-Parker camp!

Nobody in the history of the planet earth has ever GAINED weight from abusing cocaine. What affected his weight and performance was pain.

I feel like your assessment is being awfully dismissive of his actual career with the Pirates. As to criticizing him for leaving the Pirates, he spent an extremely impressive 11 years with the Pirates, and that's where he had his MVP, league-leading OPS year in '78, and won a batting title the year before. It's hard for me to say he "let us down" when he helped the Pirates win a World Series and several playoff appearances. And, I think there is some inground between your first and fourth points. Signing with Cincinnati (his hometown) might have had a few "starting fresh" variables in it as well considering the drug controversy he got caught up in during his last years with the Pirates.

No, I am not. He was one of my favorite players of all time but the relationship soured. Once again, big contract, did drugs, gained weight, didn't care. Let's look at his performance and how his numbers fell after the drugs and the guaranteed money. Also actively brought drug dealer into lockerroom.

When did he start doing drugs? When did he stop?

You don't know, so you have no way to show correlation between his drug use and his performance. It's pretty easy to show correlation between his performance and his knee problems, though.

Parker made the All Star team in three of the five years of his big contract. So much for that theory.

You're right about his attitude, though. It surely went into the shitter right about the time people started throwing batteries at him.
