Jeremy, if you don't know, I'm a huge hockey fan and there's no way the Russian hockey league (KHL) is going to be able to compete with the NHL in North America. There are teams in the KHL that are having significant problems making payroll. The Russian economy is heavily reliant on oil and the disgusting return of communism. No way does the KHL legally have players at the level of Ovechkin and Malkin stay there for the possible $10-15 million tax free contract knowing the risk exists every day that someone from the restored KGB would try to blackmail the players. There's also the risk as it exists today for the KHL's money to run dry and players are told to keep playing and the money will come later.

Now for baseball to ever turnaround, it is going to take 15-20 ownerships, in the small to middle markets to put up a fight against the clubs in NY, Boston, LA, and Chicago. The problem will always be the lack of incentive for a team like the Pirates to invest in the present to bring prosperity in the future because for every dollar spent doesn't equal a $1.25 in revenue. So the Pirates will take their $1 of revenue-sharing and allocate it to paying down the debt and other non major league or system related expenses.

I have no doubt the Pirates ownership group has employed smart finance executives to create the formula for a 1-10 year run operating the franchise and how their revenues (team and MLB welfare) will be at a level valuable enough to put the team up for sale and make a nice cash run.

The KHL is seen by many as the second best league in the world right now. Above leagues in Germany, England, and the AHL in America.

Now I agree that the Russian teams have some serious issues pertaining to their long term viability. But you have top teams in Finland, the Czech Republic, and even Germany talking about joining up. But they have a looooooooooooooooooooooooong way to until they have the players and arenas that come anywhere close to the quality that you find in North America. There are college arenas in the US that are higher quality than some of the barns in Russia.

Now what you're proposing with the owners could, and probably would, be seen as a form of collusion. It could result in the formation of a "Super League" with the NY, LA, Chicago, and a handful of other teams. ESPN, Fox, and the networks would line up for something like that with the "second league" being relegated to Versus and the like. The Super League could even reach out to Japan and Korea for teams. Not that I think that will happen anytime soon, but it's a possible outcome of a war within MLB.
