This has pretty much gone unnoticed around here so far, but I have to say, this is one of the more interesting moves Ive seen made around here in a long time.

Not only are we taking on his arbitration years, but after that we have a one time, team option for the 1st two free agent years. Now, forgettting Doumit specifically for a minute (3 years from now he could be in permanent traction), whats interesting here is how Huntington has set a precedent for extending the clubs control over a player by 2 years. Instead of 6 years and out the door, now it can be 8. 8 years of control goes a long way towards chipping away at the disadvantage we face when trying to sign a player reaching free agency. It means we could take just about any player into his 30s, no matter how talented. And the enticement is arbitration years generosity, far more manageable than free agent years generosity.

This is very smart.

A quote from the press conference from Doumit on Dejan's blog...

Quote:
About the 2009 team: "You're either on board or you aren't. There are certain guys on this team who are on board. Everyone knows what it takes to win, and everyone wants to win. We're going to right this ship, and it's going to start with day one of spring training. ... I truly believe there are going to be some special things happening. If our pitchers show up like I've seen them pitch, if Adam LaRoche can find some holes in April and May, if Jack and Freddy do what they're capable of, and Nate ... enough said ... I saw some great things out of Brandon Moss. ... I'm excited. I can't wait. If I had my way, spring training would start tomorrow."

This deal gets me excited. Doumit has become my favorite Pirates player over the past few years. Dude plays the game the way I like to see the game played.

I like it played with a .400 OBP and .500 slugging, something which Doumit has the ability to do, IMO.

All he has to do is stay healthy and keep putting up these numbers and its a bargain for us. And better, you may be looking at the new face of early free agency, and one we can afford.

At first I couldn't figure out what this meant. If you tilt your head to the right, it's a pretty heart, if you tilt it to the left, a hairless nutsack.

I'm guessing former?

Either way, it indicates a fondness for our starting catcher, huh? Just a matter of degree...

This is why I enjoy this site so much. First a great discussion of the signing. Then several great comments and graphics to make me laugh again and again.

Thanks guys.... keep it up.

I vote for the cute little heart.
