You've mentioned this hot start a few times but I hesitate to call two months of fairly good hitting a hot start.

He had a .792 OPS in the month of May and then has posted a .700 OPS over the past 28 days.

The OPS has stayed fairly high due to the great starting point but a .700 OPS isn't all that exceptional or far off from his projected .695 OPS.

Fair point. I think most of the issue is the .526 OPS since the LAA series. Before that 11 game slump (I think that's the appropriate term at this point) his OPS was .798 which would be tied with Lowrie for 5th in the majors right now.

Also, even if he were to end up with his projected .695 OPS that'd rank 12th in the MLB among shortstops. Not great but not awful. People often forget that average means half of the league is worse than them too.

Well, the response that will be coming is that he doesn't have the range or play good enough defense to offset that kind of offense.

Given what I've read about the shifting the Pirates do, the shifts might compensate for range and allow for lower offensive production to be useful.

Always new variables to consider.

True. On that note, it's interesting how the Pirates are using an elaborate defensive scheme to potentially offset weaknesses in their defense. It's a level of strategy that one may not really expect in baseball, though I have no idea if the Pirates are unique in their frequency of shifts.

Because even the best hitters get out 60% of the time and he's decidedly not one of the best?

I'll take "obvious explanations" for $1000, Alex. :D

We just had a leadoff hitter with some speed get on base with no outs and Cutch, Pedro and Martin did nothing. While I agree we need a hitter, I'm not convinced even Stanton would make a difference in this offense.

Our issues OBP and Avg with RISP across the board. Hell, as good as Pedro has been it's almost like every one of his homers happen with no one on.

I looked. 15 of his 23 taters have been solo shots. I have no idea how that compares with other 20+ homer guys, but you are right, it seems like a lot of his HRs have been with no one aboard.

Yikes. I could see trading one of the young arms for Rios/Ramirez, but not Polanco, who will probably be better than Rios in RF in less than a year...

I'd do that in a heartbeat.

Minus Polanco and plus Lambo and I'd consider it.

Gregory Polanco profiles to be better than Marte. And he's close to the majors.

It'd be easier to stomach if they weren't both over 30. Now that the steroid era has passed I think it's tough to expect anybody at that age to discover the fountain of youth and we aren't in a position to be looking for short-term fixes.

Then why on earth would the White Sox consider the trade? In order to gain something of significance the Pirates have to give up pieces of strength. I'm unsure what the contract status of Rios/Ramirez is but if they are under control for both this season and next this seems like a "hell yes" for me.

They're under terrible contracts, and Bowden mentioned they're looking to clear cap space and beef up their farm system.

Polanco just got rated #13 prospect in all of baseball by Baseball America, he'd be closer to a centerpiece for Chris Sale than Rios/Ramirez. Rios' trade value is negative at this point in time.

I'd sure take his .281, 11 HR, 19 SB's from the RF spot. Ramirez has a pretty good glove and an above average bat for a SS. I'd love his 19 SB's too.

Well sure, but they aren't getting more than Mel Rojas Jr., Andy Oliver, and (if the Sox eat some of the contract) Wyatt Mathisen for them.

We don't need to make moves to help for this year and next year....especially not with aging players and bad contracts.

You're right, let's just assume the Pirates are going to be relevant in 2015. Let's just assume there won't be injuries to Cutch, Pedro, Marte, Cole, or that the minor league guys all succeed in the bigs.
