FYSA:

Alexei Ramirez since July 31st:

167 PA, 20 R, 20 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 16 RBI, 6 BB, 10 SO, .277/.301/.409/.710

Ho-hum.

Drats. We coulda made him the highest paid backup in baseball after all. The OPS is all I care about there. Everything else you listed is reflected in it or is a result of his teammates (runs, RBI). Still not gonna get him in the lineup, especially since his home park is a hitter's park.

Plus then you're stuck with his .671 OPS (or .651 if we wanna use his 2012 season) for all of next year. Might as well just get Brendan Ryan at that point.

Also FYSA, since TD:

Nate Schierholtz:
130 PA, 15 R, 5 2B, 6 HR, 21 RBI, 6 BB, 32 SO, .215/.254/.405/.659

Alex Rios:
153 PA, 19 R, 7 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 20 RBI, 9 BB, 23 SO, .308/.353/.455/.807

Rios might have very well been a solid acquisition, but seeing as how Byrd is a fraction of the cost of Rios and has produced nearly as much in fewer games, he looks to be a steal.

That's all well and good, but why would you want to trade for a guy who is producing less than Jose Tabata over that timeframe?

Tabata had a 205 wRC+ in August and has a 95 wRC+ in September (before the game tonight). Rios had an 89 wRC+ in August and has a 186 wRC+ in September.

The question wasn't whether Alex Rios was an average player. He is decidedly dead average. It's whether he offered any sort of upgrade. He didn't, and hasn't.

Byrd has been pretty great for the Buccos. Great pick up.

I agree. And I liked Byrd better than the other options. Thought the Mets were stupid for holding on to him. It's definitely a career year type of thing but he was a worthwhile guy to target for sure.

Yeah, that's what I was saying (also I was pointing out how I was wrong; I was a Ramirez/Schierholtz advocate).

Mostly I was pointing out how Byrd vs. Rios has turned out in the Buccos favor. Equal/better production for fractions of the cost.

NH continues to prove his prowess.

I think NH is a phenomenal GM. Really good at getting value and for the most part he sticks to his guns.

I'm pretty big on continuing to build (obviously) but I DID like Byrd and honestly the fact that Rios is doing better than Schierholtz kind of surprises me. I definitely preferred Schierholtz when the Mets announced Byrd was unavailable but he definitely seems to have dropped off.

Think we lucked out in that regard as well, because both he and Byrd had numbers that suggested they could regress....but Byrd hasn't slowed down a bit. Glad he's on the team, and while I'd have loved him at the deadline he would've been far more expensive when multiple teams could bid on him.

Following up on Byrd, has anyone else sensed that we're seeing more flyballs now since he came on with his stated mechanical adjustment to create more fly balls and thus, better average. I'm thinking Tabata in particular, is showing me a lot more fly balls now.

Or, am I dreaming in my old age?

You know, I'd be tempted to offer Marlon Byrd a one-year, $1.5 million deal to return in 2014 so that the Pirates don't have to rush Polanco. Plus, if Polanco comes up in June next year, the team is still deep and fortified in case of injury.

Just a thought.

(I'd like APE's thoughts on whether Byrd's potentially juiced "career year" would point to a severe return to the mean in 2014 if he's off-cycle for too long).

Alex Rios just hit for the cycle by the 6th inning (but he's an awful hitter)

;)

Alex Rios August OPS: .703
Alex Rios September OPS: .780 (not counting tonight's game)

Jose Tabata's August OPS: .851
Jose Tabata's September OPS: .825

Who woulda thunk it?

You know who also hit for the cycle? Daryl Ward. Maybe we should have signed him.
