Part of the problem:

1st inning counts after 2 pitches/3 pitches:
Marte: 1-1/double on third pitch
Mercer: 0-2/1-2
McCutchen: 1-1/1-2
Jones: 1-1/1-2
Alvarez: 1-1/1-2

2nd inning counts after 2 pitches/3 pitches:
Sanchez: 1-1/1-2
Walker: 1-1/pop-up
McKenry: 0-2/1-2
Cumpton: 1-1/1-2

3rd inning counts after 2 pitches/3 pitches:
Marte: 0-2/1-2
Mercer: 0-2/1-2
McCutchen: 2-0/2-1
Jones: 1-1/1-2
Alvarez: 1-1/1-2

So far . . (I'm typing as Sanchez bats) . . 14 Pirates to the plate and only one hitter has been in a hitter's count (2-0). 4 hitters have faced an 0-2 count and 9 have faced a 1-1 count. But . . . 11 of the 13 batters that have not put the third pitch in play are facing a 1-2 count. Only McCutchen has faced a 2-1 count.

Folks . . notwithstanding the run scored in the 3rd . . . you cannot expect any semblance of productivity when battling from behind.

You can now add Sanchez: 1-1/1-2. 12 of 14 batters are hitting from a position of weakness/pitcher's strength. Recipe for failure.

As I finish this, Choo singles on a 2-0 count.

Good throw there by McKenry.

So far . . . Bucs are 6-12 in reaching base when a ball is put in play.

Cumpton cant find the strike zone, it might be time to get him out of there.

Only a solo shot for Pedro. Why did we take him 2nd overall?

He's got one more in him at most.
This is where not scoring more runs last night kills.
Had to burn 6 bullpen innings after a strong Locke performance.

Watson, Reid, Morris are available. As is Welker.
Betting that Grilli, Melancon and Mazzaro are emergency only.

Anything less than a 3 run, bases empty homerun every time up is just unacceptable and he should be booed.

I don't usually like bunting, but with the need for only 1 run late in the ballgame and Cutch up afterwards, I might do it.

Calling for a bunt there is a no brainer. More lack of execution.

Outside the box thinking here . . . do you pinch hit Martin for Jones? I'd seriously consider it . . .

I don't think it's a terrible idea. Cingrani is a lefthanded strikeout specialist. Terrible matchup for Jones and Alvarez.

Bunting and baserunning seem to be constant sources of struggle with this team. And I mean that over the past few years, not just this year.

Well, given that 5 innings seems to be the new normal, we can be satisfied with how Cumpton performed vs the Reds. One earned run, five hits and only one walk is pretty darn serviceable. Good on ya, Mate!

Another stellar effort by Jones to put the ball in play with a runner on third and less than two out.

Chances of Pedro getting a hit against a tough lefty . . . I'd put it at less than 5%.

C'mon Pedro - clear the bases.
