We often post about the upcoming schedule when they are "critical" blocks of the season (although they are all critical). But leading up to the All-Star game after the Reds series, we play ONE team with a winning record:
Angels 31-40
Mariners 32-40
Brewers 28-41
Phils 35-37
Cubs 29-40
A's 43 -30
Mets 27-40

It is not unreasonable to think that we could win 13-15 of those 20 games, putting us close to 20 games over .500 at the break. We will have Wandy and AJ back during that stretch to go with Locke, Cole, Morton, Liriano. As Hurdle would say, "We are in a good place."

Quick note . . . Angels have been playing better baseball and if my calculations are correct, the Bucs will draw King Felix and a very hot Jeremy Bonderman when they travel to Seattle for a two game series.

And, FWIW, the Cardinals are 2-3 in their most recent games against the Marlins and the Cubs.

But . . . you are right . . . the opportunity to make some hay will be there.

I'm not counting any chickens, in terms of how many they're going to win or who is coming back when.

But I would really like to see a victory tonight. Last night was especially sweet.

The key thing is that 12 of those 20 games will be at PNC.

The five-game West Coast trip may cost the Bucs a win, be it during the trip or directly following it.

After the Seattle trek though it's 12 of 15 at home, with the three on the road at Wrigley (only a moderate distance).

If the Bucs can maintain their ~.658 home-win %, that's eight W's. Which means that so long as they split the eight on the road (as they have so far this year) they'll see 12 W's.

A 55-38 record (assuming they split with the Reds) heading into the break would still leave them on track for a 95-win pace.

Based on the favorable home stand and level of competition it's possible for them to finish above that come July 14th, but 55 should be the minimum goal.

Very exciting stuff.

Aside from the Cumpton-Felix matchup---which could become Wandy or Gomez instead---the projected starting matchups are even for this road trip.

The 2012 Pirates taught me, and the 2008 and 2012 Steelers confirm, that basing expectations on the schedule or the opposition is a fallacy. If the Pirates play well, they win; if they don't, they don't - doesn't matter who the opponent is.

I rest my case....this team is not perfect, but they are for real.
