Correction: Chapman had huge control problems as a rookie. He walked 7.9 batters per nine innings. Since then he's averaged 3.1 walks per nine innings. The Pirates as a team are averaging 3.5.

I don't think the problem is hitting batters. The problem is the tendency to throw at heads. Leake got McCutchen before in the neck, and yesterday would have hit the same spot, but Cutch managed to get his shoulder up. I don't know if Leake is going at the head on purpose, but if he can't throw inside without nearly decapitating somebody he needs to stop throwing inside.

There is no doubt in my mind that Chapman is a serial headhunter.

Exactly my thoughts on the matter.

Choo wearing that is 100% on Chapman. Don't think that was in any way related to Leake, and while I get Walk saying it should've been taken care of last night....we didn't get a chance to do anything last night.

And that's part of the problem. Chapman headhunts with no retribution for anybody...he's the closer.

Preaching to the choir, brother.

I entered into a discussion with a Reds fan on another board who insisted that the problem was that Chapman was simply wild ... twice to Swisher in ONE at-bat, apparently.

I wrote that as soon as Chapman becomes a SP'er, watch how quickly he learns to spot his fastball.

Chapman is a pussy. Throws at a guy in the 9th inning and has no chance to bat.usually never does.

Get at Chapman by having his 'girlfriend' that was found tied up his hotel room in Pittsburgh last summer sit out near the bullpen all series long and keep a seat for her behind home plate too when they bring him in to pitch.

The Pirates lead the league in throwing bean balls. They don't seem intentional, although the one took out Scutaro by getting him in the hand that led to retaliation and led to them throwing at McCutchen and getting Bochy and Kontos suspended.

Though it seems like the Reds are making the news for it though. And it seems like no one can retaliate because the umps are quick to warn them.

Daryl Strawberry disagrees. Armando Benitez (#49) has just plunked Tino Martinez. During the ensuing brawl Strawberry, cloaked in a dark Yankees warmup jacket, fires off a punch to the head then flings Benitez into the dugout.

Timing is everything......

Latos is a bit mad about the Pirates throwing at the Reds...

Quote:
Pittsburgh won the game, but Latos got the last word. "It's time somebody stepped up and did something about the team that's hit more guys in the league than anybody," he said of the Pirates, who lead the majors with 39 hit batters. "You've got a team drilling guys over and over again. It's time for the league to step up and end it. That fired me up."

Latos is a little young to have short term memory loss. If Chapman doesn't throw at Walker's head in the bottom of the ninth of a 4-1 game the night before (and who did the same thing to McCutchen last year), Choo doesn't get plunked yesterday. Simple as that.

Wonder how Latos would feel if Justin Wilson threw 100 mph at Votto's head last year, hitting him on the shoulder, and then threw 100 mph at Phillips' head, barely missing him.

If Latos thought we should be thrown at, why didn't he?

Most people realized that Morton hitting Choo was in retaliation for Chapman almost hitting Walker. So they let it end right there.

And the fact that the Reds didn't throw at anybody last night refutes the claim that Baker is a thug and a punk.

And I like the fact that our pitchers are hitting guys. I don't think very many of them were intentional. I just think that we finally have pitchers who are willing and able to throw inside, which is a big reason why they've been so successful.

If I'm reading the graph right, it confirms what I heard Neil Walker say about Chapman. The book on him that he throws his fastball high and away or low and inside.

Hurdle and Walker noted that when Chapman misses with his fastball, he generally misses high and outside against right-handed batters.

"I've faced him several times, and that's the first time that I've seen a fastball anywhere above my belt," Walker said. "He's typically down and in to righties, and up and away to righties, with his fastball."

Look, anybody who doubts that Chapman is a head-hunter is ignoring his history.

Chapman deals up-and-in to Swisher and barely misses inflicting serious injury because ... well, Chapman is a complete douchebag:

Swisher's response:

They should have let zagurski throw at someone before he was releases. Of course, they would not have thought it was intentional. But then again, he may have missed too!

Zagurski plunked Phillips.

Shortly after he was hit by Pirates reliever Mike Zagurski's first pitch in the eighth inning on Friday, television cameras caught Phillips looking rather perturbed.

In the first inning of the Reds' 6-0 win, Cincinnati pitcher Johnny Cueto hit Pittsburgh star Andrew McCutchen with a pitch.

"It wasn't that I wanted to start something," Phillips said before Saturday's contest at PNC Park. "It was just that, you're getting hit on the first pitch, especially a lefty. I just looked and said, 'Come on, man. How many times am I going to get hit for something I didn't do?' If I did some stuff, it's different. If I get hit because of what other people do, it kind of [stinks] ... I'm the fall guy."
