If the prognosticators are correct, Appel will be going to the Cubs with the #2 overall pick. Reporters in Chicago claiming that Cubs will take either Gray or Appel.

Cubs' slot value at #2 is $6.7M.
Astros' slot value at #1 is $7.7M.

If he accepts strict slot value, Appel gained about $2.9M by returning to Stanford and having a very good year. Looks like his gamble is going to pay him handsomely. Any bets as to whether Appel will jump at slot money from the Cubs or whether he will ask for 1/1 money in an effort to force Chicago to go above slot?

He'd have to fall to the Indians at #5 for it to be a "break even." Indians' slot at #5 is $3.78M.

While I won't say that I'm rooting for the top four teams not to select Appel, there would be some awfully delicious irony if Appel is chosen higher than he was last year but has to accept slot money slightly less than he was offered last year.

Chances are extremely remote but stranger things have happened.

I can't even begin to imagine the contentiousness of the negotiations if Appel fell to the Indians and demanded 1/1 money ($4M above slot). That would make me laugh. Hard.

Twitter indicating that there are rumbles for Appel going 1-1.

Would think the Cubs jump on Gray soon after.

Thank goodness they aren't taking Stewart. That'd pretty much send McGuire straight to the Twins and there really hasn't been much discussion about what the Pirates would do in that case.

Gray went third to Rockies. Bryant went to Cubs.

Wow! Frazier over Moran at #5. Moran was considered an absolute lock for them.

Start crossing those fingers.

From John Sickels:

1. HOUSTON ASTROS: Houston may have a slight preference for Appel, but only at the right price. As a college senior, the July 12 signing deadline doesn’t apply to the Houston native, allowing him to essentially hold a club’s bonus pool hostage if he chooses. The Astros won’t take him without assurances of his cost. There was a lot of buzz Wednesday evening that the Cubs were closing in on a deal with Appel at No. 2, which could mean: a) he’d subsequently try to scare off Houston; b) he’d see if the Astros could trump Chicago’s offer; or c) no agreement is imminent and this is just an attempt to increase his leverage.

Moran to Miami. Darn. There were Meadows/Shipley talks.

Red Sox a wild card. Royals are apparently locked in on pitchers so I think they wind up popping Shipley right before our pick.

Shipley, McGuire, and Meadows would all be great, mostly because none of them are likely to be available at 14.

At least 2 of them will be available. Pirates have been on guys ranked between 8 and 15 this whole process so as long as they don't stray from the names they've been connected to they should be alright.

Holy sh*t! Huge, huge, HUGE overdraft going by rankings. Hunter Dozier to Royals, that is.

We could get Shipley (who was supposed to be locked in at 6), McGuire, or Meadows now.

Meadows and McGuire have been linked to us a ton. Shipley not so much, nobody thought he'd be here.

Austin Meadows is the pick. Pretty much a giant bag of tools. Great pick.

I could see him potential moving to 1st before it's all said and done. His arm is kind of week. Love the pick though.

Wow. Bickford. There goes a guy who was rumored to be in play later for the Royals.

Dom Smith to Mets at 11.

We should get a shot at 3 of Renfroe, McGuire, Peterson, Shipley, Stanek.

I would be surprised if Seattle doesn't take the hometown catcher. Worked out for the Pirates...
