Good riddance. I have always thought he was one of the worst columnists I have ever read. Get rid of Ron Cook and the PG's circulation might go up.

Best news I've heard in a long while.

It's one thing to always be a contrarian, play devil's advocae, and try to stir up debate. It is quite another to be a raving imbecile who rarely bases their arguments on facts.

I often said that if I had the time, I would love to start a blog and Fire-Joe-Morgan each and every one of his columns (ha...I just used the name of a defunct blog as a verb). Thank you, Bob, for saving me from myself.

Of course, if Smizik is stepping down, that begs the question...what is a step down from Smizik?

There will be a time of mourning done by Bullish...his columns were bibles verses to him...

Maybe Nutting has more power than people thought? His retirement sounds alot like Lanny's

Smizik left because the PG isn't making enough money to support such a large sports staff.

I wonder who'll give Smizik a forum for his whining, once-a-month articles to promote his self serving agenda against Mark Madden that noone else cares about.

Right. You are going to see more cut backs in the media business. The Trib eliminated their message boards and referenced this site for Pirate talk. Has there been an influx of new members?
As per Smizik....he had his opinions just like anyone else. Some I agreed with, others I did not. For the most part, he was dead on right over the last 7 or 8 years regarding the status, fate and future of the Pirates. He was down on the organization but that was just stating the obvious and the truth, but some of "you cant handle the truth."

I'll take Smizik over Ron "Captain Obvious" Cook any day of the week.

While others took his word as gospel!!!

The finding reasons to be critical thing didnt bother me, thats fine. The problem was he was just such a bad writer, hardly ever made a case in a compelling or insightful way. This is a man of shallow intellect, his expressed opinions no more than a series of thin pebbles skipping over the water. Couldnt stand him.

if you liked or hated his work, it does not matter. The fact that you read his work was the goal and his objective.

Not true. For any writer, its not enough that hes read. He wants to be taken seriously, to have his opinions play a serious role in the ongoing discourse, not to be dismissed as a hack.

I'm pretty sure Smizik would consider being called a hack as a compliment.

Indeed. Merely being read is the goal of the newspaper, not the author. The author wants something more - he wants notoriety and prestige.

If you read his work, but hated it because his product was so bad, I guess you know you were (dare I say it?)....an enabler! This could lead to a more serious condition known as an enabling apologist, where you start to defend the man as if he were your daddy. In the final stages you Believe Utterly Lousy Logic, or BULL for short.
