Quote:
Kerry Wood is the Cleveland Indians' new closer.

The former Chicago Cubs star finalized a $20.5 million, two-year contract Saturday, a deal that includes a 2011 option that could become guaranteed.

Wood gets $10 million next year and $10.5 million in 2010. The Indians' $11 million option would vest if Wood has 55 games finished in either of the next two years.

Shapiro must think the Indians are on the verge. The Indians rarely spend that kind of dough on a closer, even if it's one as good as Wood.

Did Dusty Baker become the Idians Pitching Coach?

No, he's still working on destroying Edison Volquez's arm.

10 million a year for a guy with a well documented history of arm problems?

No, baseball's GMs don't have a problem being fiscally responsible.

This does seem pricy given his history, but not a bad pick up considering the 34 saves last year. I guess we'll see.

If he stays healthy, it's almost a bargain especially if the Tribe stay in the hunt for the AL Central.

If he's hurt for a long period and Indians are playing for .500, it's a total waste of money.

It's a high-risk, high-reward type deal, although I trust that the Indians are better at keeping pitchers healthy than the Cubs are.

Dude threw 120 pitches in a high school playoff game in Texas 2 days after he was drafted. Wood has to shoulder a little of the blame for his bum wing.

Really? You think Wood was the one that determined how long he stayed on the mound in high school?

I think Wood could have called it a day before getting up to 120. My point is that Wood hasn't really shown the kind of maturity in taking care of his body that guys like Maddux and Compny have shown.

Kerry Wood's pitch count ranks, IMO, a distant third on the list of reasons why he has been injury prone. Much more significant are (1) his awful mechanics and (2) the 12 to 6 curveball. His right arm was a ticking time bomb.
