Really disappointed in the offense this series. Nearly all the pitchers we faced came in with high ERA's, the weather was warm, and still we could not hit the ball with any authority whatsoever.

I really don't know what the problem is but its not at all what I was expecting.

Took 2 of 3, all that matters to me.

If I recall correctly (and I think I'm right), the Pirates had a series with the Astros kind of late in the season where they won the series or swept the series but didn't play very good baseball. And I believe the offense didn't swing the bats real well.

Soon after that series, the Pirates began their collapse.

We have the Cubs coming up on Tuesday. I believe everyone remembers what they did to the Pirates last season during a home series. I believe they swept the Pirates.

I don't want to sound like "Mr. Doom and Gloom" here but...

Then there were the Padres lasy season. :?

These are the games the Pirates have to win AND also play good solid baseball.

The Pirates didn't play real good baseball against the Astros the last few days although they won the series.

That gives me cause for concern...

The pitching was darn good though. Even in Melancon's blown hold he wasn't hit hard. He induced two ground balls that just found holes. Gomez was cruising until the 5th and that have more to do with conditioning. The bullpen came into that game and shut things down to allow for the miraculous walkoff to happen.

I agree, the offense needs to pick it up some. They're below league average in just about every offensive category.

I was frustrated with how the Bucs approached Lyles and Bedard, but Harrell was dealing.

Winning 2 of 3 is good and more important, but I want to believe this is a really good team. And they didn't convince me of that.

Maybe they were pressing, thinking they were supposed to hit these guys.

Its better to struggle against a weak team so there is still a chance you are in the game until the 9th.

I wonder how much them knowing they were playing a crappy team hurt them as in them trying to do too much and pad their stats.

The fact that there are two teams in the NL with more wins than the Pirates makes me believe this is a good team.

The fact that they're:
- 2-1 against the D-Backs,
- 2-1 against the Braves,
- 4-2 against the Cards, and
- 3-0 against the Reds

(Yep, that's right. 11-4 against NL teams with equal or greater wins than the Pirates' 26)

makes me believe they're a pretty good team.

Teams are going to have bad a bad series here and there but one series does not a season make. The good teams still win said series against the worst team in the MLB when they have a bad series. That's part of the reason why I think this team is pretty good. Don't know if I'm ready to say really good yet but I'm rather confident in saying pretty good.

Actually, I thought the approach to Bedard was fine, but unlucky. In fact, I call that second game unlucky overall (or maybe a mistake by Hurdle leaving Mercer in during the 8th, when Barmes gets to the seeing-eye single[s]).

For example, Cutches' double in the bottom of the eighth should have won the game on any given night as that double usually starts rattling around the left field corner, allowing Snider to walk home. In this case, poof, right to the LF. Same type of bad luck throughout the game cost the Bucs more runs.
