Interesting quote in DK's article today.

Quote:
The Pirates also claimed three players in the minor league phase of the Rule 5, all out of Latin American summer leagues. In order of rounds, the players were shortstop Andres Santos, 22, from the Yankees; infielder Rafael Quintero, 21, from the Cleveland Indians; and right-handed pitcher Gerardo Esparza, 21, from the Seattle Mariners. The first two were playing in the Dominican Republic, Esparza in Venezuela.

Representatives for two of those three teams later approached the Pirates to ask how they learned about those players, as Rule 5 choices rarely come directly out of Latin America.

Huntington credited director of player development Kyle Stark, director of baseball operations Bryan Minniti and the team's statistical guru, Dan Fox, for "extensive, exhaustive work in identifying these talents for us."

Sounds like the other teams got caught off guard by the way he wrote it.

Also, did DK make a mistake with Santos? He keeps calling him a shortstop, but everything I find online says he is a lefty pitcher.

One can only hope. I will say that I'm impressed with Huntington & Co.'s resourcefulness.

If the Pirates are going to pull themselves out of the gutter, it's going to happen with Latin players.

It certainly does seem like they found a novel approach here. Ignored Latin America for a decade? Let other teams develop the talent then scoop it up when they essentially aren't expecting it.

Of course, I'm sure we'll be hearing how this was a publicity stunt or some other bs in just a few minutes...

Did I miss something or are you implying DK is Madden's "boyfriend"?
