My how time flies.
In visiting Cot's Contracts, it appears that Kdro is a free agent after next year.

He is a Boras client. Thus, he's almost certain to "test the market."

If you are Huntington, do you ride it out and let him walk away at the end of next year? Do you trade him in 2013 so that the receipient has at least one full year of him (that means that you are trading him to a large revenue team or to a contending team that wants to win immediately and needs 3B help)? Do you trade him in the offseason? Do you wait until 2014 to try to trade him (effectively undercutting a fair amount of bargaining power)? Do you at least try to buy out a couple of free agent years?

I envision that he will pose a most difficult situation for Huntington to handle. Very difficult strategy call. Very difficult. I anticipate that we may hear some "Pirates are shopping Alvarez" or "Pirates not adverse to trading Alvarez" stories as the trade deadline approaches this year.

Wait. Pedro won't be a free agent, he'll just be entering his arbitration years.

Alvarez is arbitration-eligible in 2014 (though he still has a $700,000 team option by virtue of the contract he signed in 2009), and he won't be eligible for true free agency until 2017.

My guess is that the Pirates will exercise their option and pay him $700,000 in 2014 (which is the same salary he is earning this season).

See where Pedro is 2 years from now. I genuinely believe he will produce some pre-Achilles Ryan Howard-like seasons, featuring 40 HR's, 120 RBI's, .260 BA and 190 K's.

No, no room for him with the tremendous production of Ike "Swing-and-a-miss" Davis. I mean, it would be unfair for me to have 2 guys team up for 80 HR's and 250 RBI's. :? :x

We all know how this is going to play out. He will knock the cover off the ball once he is in a
Cubs or Dodgers uniform but not a moment sooner.

Or in Pinstripes (he would love their short porch).
