John McDonald on 15 day DL due to lower back strain. Jordy Mercer back on the big league club.

Let the revelers revel and the rejoicers rejoice!!!!!

My crystal ball says "there will be many people complaining that Mercer is being "Hurdled" by being chained to the bench."

Maybe that's why he never hit a ball hard before last night...knew the ol' back would go out.

I have no idea whether or not Mercer is the answer, even at the back-up slash utility role level....

But for now....

FREE JORDY MERCER!

Hopefully Mercer will play well and claim the roster spot, and we won't see McDonald again.

When reached for comment, John McDonald had the following to say:

"You damn kids! Get off my lawn!"

The Apocalypse is coming!

Bullpen Mismanagement: Hurdle has used Grilli twice in the last 7 games in "non-save" situations and used Melancon in an "non-save" situation last night.
Veteranosity: Hurdle started Jordy "Mr. Back Up Quarterback" Mercer at 2B instead of a veteran. Hurdle is now starting Mercer tonight despite Barmes hitting the ball better recently.
Giving away outs: The Bucs are middle of the NL pack for sacrifice bunts. In fact, the only three NL teams with better records (Cards, Reds and Giants) have given away more outs than the Pirates.

Oh well . . . at least you can still point to Hurdle starting Sanchez against a righty on Monday and Tabata against a righty on Tuesday based upon SSS as evidence that he doesn't know his head from his ass.

Well, Jordy's in the lineup tonight, so Hurdle is 1-for-1 on the "giving the young guy a shot" meter.

I've been giving him more credit lately. I still think his lineups leave a bit to be desired (e.g., relying on SSS instead of career and historical splits), but his management of the bullpen appears to be improving.

He ain't Joe Maddon, but he ain't all bad, either.

Inge should be batting 8th, but I'll give Hurdle a pass simply because he's playing the kid.
