This...is why I'm skeptical (until proven wrong) about moves this organization makes. Unreal.

Why carry both Brandon Inge and John McDonald? I just don't see the point of keeping two utility-type players who lack hitting ability. Why not have at least one younger guy with upside who can swing a decent bat?

I have yet to hear a good, logical argument for keeping McDonald over Mercer. And "Hurdle won't play him" isn't a good argument; it's an excuse that can be overriden by Neal Huntington.

The article in the Trib said McDonald is the 3rd catcher...

Which is funny because Inge actually has plenty of catching experience.

Can anyone remember the last time a 3rd catcher was necessary in a game? And like RoxyChar said, Inge can catch.

When I read it, it seemed like that was an important excuse as to why Old McDonald was valuable.

And then there is Walker and Gaby Sanchez who were both catchers in the minor leagues.

All I know is, Mercer better be fielding the SS position at Indy every game or the Pirate organization has some serious explaining to do...

That's B.S. The Pirates have plenty of guys who could act as an emergency catcher, including Inge.

You know what I really don't like? The message.

"Hey kid, come up and play well after an injury to an MLB stater and we'll still send your ass right back to AAA. Why? Because we have a 38-year-old backup shortstop who has no prayer of hitting his weight who we believe will help us win games. Have fun in Indy."

Questionable (to say the least), but unsurprising, decision.

The fact that this is currently the biggest news/problem the Pirates have though, it's alright.

Maintain the FREE JORDY movement and begin the countdown to his return.

All the Pirates are doing is setting themselves up for failure. Let's say we get what we want and Mercer is up, McDonald is cut, and Mercer starts over Barmes. If Mercer struggles mightily this season the Pirates have a good backup option in Barmes. The Pirates say they are grooming him for 2014...what if he fails? There is no safety net. The Pirates will scramble to piece together a vital position in the infield.

There is no pressure this season. Next season the keys to the car are his. If he struggles the Pirates are screwed.

I knew someone would come with the "it's not that big of a deal" argument. You win.

And you're generally correct, but I have a problem with the message and the fact that, in however small of a way, the Pirates are a weaker team because of this move.

The Pirates' biggest problems seem to be: (1) overuse of the bullpen, and (2) inconsistency from Pedro.

I'm part of the crowd that wanted Mercer to stay with the big club because of the pop he has in the bat. He 26, don't give me the shit he's being groomed because that should've already happened. He's been swinging a good bat in Indy for the last three years. What does it take? He's not a prospect anymore.

I'm also part of the crowd that doesn't think he can be a full time shortstop because of his lack of range and average arm strength. That's a fact without dispute. He's a solid defender, we all know that, but shortstop is just one of those positions where range is required. Is that even up for dispute.

The bucs have a big decision to make regarding the shortstop position next season. I'll continue to root for Clint Barmes until he's no longer with the team, but the big club needs to upgrade the position next year via something other than counting on Mercer or Chase D. I'm part of the crowd that thinks an upgrade will come, either at the deadline (if the bucs are contenders and Barmes plummets) or in the offseason.

One thing is for sure. McDonald should of been released. Mercer should've stayed.

The old guy doesn't make mistakes theory is being proven wrong daily with these guys. This is flat uot a bad decision and the obsession with experienced guys is in fact holding the team back. What are they doing keeping Mcdonald???

I'm disappointed in this move solely because it is going to lead to microscopic analysis of every plate appearance by Barmes and Inge and every fielding opportunity by McDonald.

Free Steve Pearce!
Free Matt Hague!
Free Jordy Mercer!

That's exactly what happens when management makes these kind of mistakes.

Most reasonable fans aren't saying Mercer should wholly replace Barmes. Rather, we believe Mercer should be rewarded for his good play, remain with the big club, and take on Inge's super-utility role. Why do the Pirates need both Inge and McDonald? Having one spot on the bench for a guy with some upside, some pop in his bat, and a decent glove seems like a no-brainer, my friend.

What are the Pirates getting from McDonald that makes him worth keeping with the PBC over Mercer? Enlighten me.
