Here's a look at Stephen Strasburg a pitcher who will be the Nats top pick in 2009. Looks like a straight to the majors guy to me. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/08/a ... ook-a.html

Here's the Orioles top 5 prospects, Wieters is obviously 1, but 2, 3 and 4 all look like stud pitchers to me.

With a Teixiera in the lineup to go along with their young players, either one these teams will be winning by 2010.

Assuming that he is, one pitcher does not a pitching staff make. Just ask Jake Peavy and the Padres, or Edison Volquez and the Reds.

2 (Matusz) has not pitched professionally yet, and 4 (Arrieta) has not pitched above high A. While they, along with Tillman, very well may be good prospects, they are mostly projection and not substance. They are certainly in no position to help the O's win in 2009, and they likely will not be in 2010. It is far better to make sure you have a solid core on your major league team before you start splurging on free agents. The O's have not reached that point yet.

As you should know by now, prospects are no sure thing, especially pitching prospects. (Link --> There Is No Such Thing As A Pitching Prospect.) Some young players flourish; others flop, even the highly regarded ones (See Phil Hughes, Kris Benson, Delmon Young, Homer Bailey, Andy Marte, etc.). And until you have that collection of young players that can contribute now, it is irresponsible to splurge on free agents when that money could be put to better use.

The very reason Nutting isn't going after guys like Sabathia or Sheets.

Nor should he. Here is the dilemma. Most people who know anything about baseball agree with this sentiment. But you have the people who believe Nutting will spend when and if the Bucs gets competitive. You have others who say he won't. Neither side is wrong or right because the situation has never presented itself.
